Genus Amphithrax Windsor & Felder, 2017 View in CoL View at ENA

Type species. Cancer aculeatus Herbst, 1790 [Type locality: America].

Remarks. Amphithrax currently includes 9 species in both sides of the Americas plus the eastern Atlantic A. caboverdianus (Türkay, 1986) ( Windsor & Felder, 2017) . Herbst (1790: 248) referred to Cancer aculeatus (currently A. aculeatus ) as “a very rare American crab”, with no further detail as to the locality. The type locality “America” can be narrowed down to an area between Florida and Venezuela, which is the known range of this species (Florida Key, Bahamas, western Gulf of Mexico and from Cuba to Venezuela).
