72. Liancalus virens (Scopoli, 1763) (Hydrophorinae) View in CoL — new to Portugal

( Fig. 4E View FIGURE 4 )

Number of specimens recorded. 25.

Distribution. Europe; also North Africa. Portugal: six northern and central provinces.

Ecology. Recorded from five macrohabitat categories, with most records from forests and riverbanks, and none from the littoral zone and dune biotopes. All over Europe, this species is found near running water, very often on vertical surfaces, ranging from seepages (even fountains in cities) to the riverbanks at rapids, and along fast–flow-ing rivers (e.g., on bridge pillars) ( Pollet 2000). In Croatia, the species clearly preferred riverbeds to riverbanks and springs ( Pollet & Ivković 2018).

Rarity (%). 17.2 (common). Extremely rare (FL), however, recent citizen science efforts produced a surprising amount of additional data from Flanders ( Pollet & Maes 2019).

Activity period. April–July, September.
