Philippine record of distribution: Palaui Is., (Sta. Ana, Cagayan).

Note: The infrequently reported Pyropia tanegashimensis was described for the first time in the Philippines, viz. Palaui Is., Sta. Ana, Cagayan ( Dumilag et al. 2016). The morphological characteristics and phylogenetic affinity of Philippine Py. tanegashimensis among other related Pyropia species were explored. The frequently misidentified Py. suborbiculata that was previously reported from the same site has been confirmed as Py. tanegashimensis based on comparative analyses of plastid rbc L and mitochondrial COI-5 P gene sequences. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Philippine populations of Py. tanegashimensis are endemic and are distinct from the known endemic populations from Japan and to the introduced strain found in Brazil.
