Buliminus (Petraeomastus) latilabrum Annandale, 1924: 392 View in CoL , 395, pl. 16, figs 5, 5a. Pupinidius gregorii Yen, 1942: 254 View in CoL (“Pung-tsu-la” mistaken as “Tung-tsu-la”).
Material examined. NHM-Ellis Coln Acc. No. 2136: one fms belonging to original series. West of Pung-tsula (28°12΄ N, 99°12΄ E, Benzilan in new spelling.), Upper Yangtse, 2896 m a.s.l., Zool. Survey of India, Indian Museum. HBUMM-04328 (18 fmss and one junvile. 17 shells measured, see description; specimen-7 was crashed for dissection): Xiangcheng (28°54΄ N, 99°48΄ E), Sichuan, 2004-IX-2, coll. K.Shi.
Distribution. Yu nn a n.
Type locality. West of Pung-tsu-la, Upper Yangtsa (Yunnan).
Diagnosis. Shell bandless; not striate. Aperture indistinctly with angular tubercle. Most swollen part at body whorl. With 6.750–7.500 whorls; height 22.1–30 ( Annandale, 1923), diam. maj. 12.3–16.6 (16.6 from NHM specimen, this study. In Annandale, 1923, the reflexed peristome is not included in major diameter).
Re-description of shell. Subcylindrical; apex not protruded. Most swollen part at body whorl. Shell dextral; thin; solid; opaque; glossy; not speckled; with 6.750–7.208–7.500 whorls. Whorls not shouldered; flattened. Growth lines usually not very clear. Embryonic shell smooth; polished; with 1.500–1.594–1.875 whorls. Postnuclear whorls smooth. Suture normal, without narrow defined zone on beneath whorl. Last whorl gradually ascending towards aperture; rounded at periphery; without smoothed spiral peripheral depression nor rugate region. Shell 22.1–24.0–25.3 high; 12.3–14.0– 15.5 in diam. maj. Height/width ratio 1.53–1.72–1.98. Aperture completely attached to body whorl; ovate; not adnate; almost vertical; not armed; indistinctly with angular tubercle; in a plane; 11.1–11.6–12.5 high; 9.1–9.8–10.8 wide. Ratio of shell height to aperture height 1.91–2.06–2.18. Peristome reflexed with distinct cuff. Cuff made by the reflexed peristome straight and not curved backward. Peristome expanded; sharp. Parietal callus distinct. Columellar margin reflexed. Columella arched. Outer edge of columellar lip vertical. Umbilicus narrowly open. Apical whorls normally coloured. Shell multicoloured; brownish yellow, narrowly and indistinctly brightly banded just beneath suture.
Genitalia. Vas deferens long; of even thickness; entering epiphallus apically with distinct demarcation. Epiphallus extremely long; cylindrical and of uniform thickness; forming numerous loops between epiphallic caecum and vas deferens insertion; externally smooth. Epiphallic caecum blunt apically; nearly in middle of epiphallus. Flagellum short; tubular; proximally normal; with tip pointed. Penis with terminal entrance of epiphallus. Penis clavate; thin-walled; distally enlarged into a penial caecum; internally with more than 2 fine longitudinal pilasters. Penis internal V-shaped pilaster with free distal end. Free end not reaching penial retractor insertion. Papilla developed by fused proximal pilasters forming V-shaped structure absent. Other structure inside penis absent. Penial appendix long; branched off from penis at some distance from atrium; divided into sections into sections including A-1+A-2, A-3 and A-4+A-5. A-1 and A-2 interiorly with longitudinal fine pilasters. A-1 and A-2 fused. A-2 near A-3 internally with a ring of papilla. A-2 and A-3 not fused. A-3 opening into A-2 by needle-like long papilla. Boundary between A-4 and A-5 indistinct. A-5 short; slightly convoluted. Penial retractor biramous; attaching to penis in middle part and to A-1+ A-2; with penial retractor arms arising from diaphragm closed to each other. Additional retractor other than penial or appendicular absent. Muscular band connecting vagina and epiphallus absent. Atrium short; without atrial retractor. Free oviduct much shorter than vagina. Vagina long; straight; not swollen; not lined with loose, spongy tissue; unpigmented. Bursa copulatrix duct long; proximally strongly twisted. Bursa copulatrix with stalk; without apical ligament; normal in size; with short neck; well defined. Diverticle normally present; longer than reservoir; somewhat expanded. Bursa copulatrix and diverticle distinguishable; forked more distally from their base. Spermatophore unknown.
Measurement of genitalia. P: 7.5; Ep: 31.5; Fl: 0.9. VD: 15.4. Va: 6.7; FO: 2.7; BCD: 19.3; BC: 1.9; D: 7.8. A-1+A-2: 4.5. A3: 1.4. A-4+A-5: 18.8 (in HBUMM-04328-specimen 7).
Remarks. This species can be easily distinguished from Pupinidius gregorii Moellendorff, 1901 , as showed in its less protruding apex, subcylindrical build, distinctly larger aperture (including reflexed peristome), a narrow bright band beneath suture, very obscure growth lines, more obvious callus and so on. Besides, the localities of these two species are quite geographically separated. So in the present work, the species Pupinidius latilabrum ( Annandale, 1923) is validated.
The new collected specimens (HBUMM-04328) are conchologically distinctly shorter than the specimens of the original series. Because there is no other remarkable difference between them, and the two localities respectively in Yunnan and in Sichuan is geographically closed, we consider that the specimens of these two localities are not to be treated as different species unless the anatomical data is available from the specimens of the type locality.
