Genus Denisiella Folsom & Mills, 1938 View in CoL
Type species: Sminthurides seurati Denis, 1925
Diagnosis. SMINTHURIDIDAE LAcKING TIBIOTARSAL ORGAN, MALE ANTENNAE HIGHLY MODIfIED fOR cLASPING; TRIcHOBOTHRIA ELEMENTS IN ANTENNA ARE TRI1, TRI2 ON ANT. II; TRI3 ON ANT. III. MODIfIED SETAE B1 TO B6 ON THE SAME TUBERcLE ON ANT. II AND B7 ISOLATE; SETA C1 AND C3 WELL DEVELOPED, THE fIRST AS BLUNT LAMELLA AND THE SEcOND AS A STRONG SPINE ON ANT . III; ANT. IV SIMPLE NOT ANNULATED IN BOTH SEXES WITH fEW SENSILLA DIffIcULT TO DISTINGUISH. LABRUM SETAL fORMULA 6/ 5,5,4. SIX OR EIGHT EYES PER SIDE. MALE HEAD OfTEN WITH A NASAL ORGAN, cOMPOSED BY A STRONG ALVEOLUS AND fOUR fINELY cILIATED SETAE AND SOMETIMES ALSO TWO SPINE SETAE. USUALLY ONE DORSO-PROXIMAL SENSORIAL ORGAN ON TITA. I fORMED BY fOUR BLADDER-SHAPED SENSILLA Of DIffERENT SIZE AND STRUcTURE ON THE MALES. ONE POLYcARINATE SETA VENTRALLY ON PROXIMAL TITA. II, OfTEN IN A cONcAVITY. FROM ZERO TO fIVE SHORT AND THIcK SPINES WITH STRONG SERRATIONS ON TITA. III Of MALES AND fEMALES, AND cOXAE WITH A SMALL SPINE. OfTEN TWO OR JUST ONE SMALL BARBULATE SPINES ON EAcH Of THE THREE ANAL VALVES Of fEMALE; MUcRO WITH TWO LAMELLAE, INNER ONE cAN BE SERRATE. ONE MUcRONAL SETA ALWAYS PRESENT. MALES ARE MUcH SMALLER THAN fEMALES.
Remarks. REcENT cHARAcTERS ADDED TO THE DIAGNOSIS ARE THE LABRAL fORMULA, THE NASAL ORGAN, THE KIND Of SENSILLA Of TIBIOTARSUS I, THE POLYcARINATE SETA ON TIBIOTARSUS II AND THE NUMBER Of SERRATE SPINE-LIKE ON TIBIOTARSI III. Denisiella BELONGS TO THE GROUP Of SMINTHURIDIDAE WHIcH LAcKS TIBIOTARSAL ORGAN ON LEG III AND HAS ONE MUcRONAL SETA, cONTRARY TO Sphaeridia , WHIcH BESIDES LAcKING BOTH cHARAcTERS (TITA III ORGAN AND MUcRONAL SETA), PRESENT VERY SIMPLE ANTENNAE, WITH fEW MODIfIcATIONS fOR cLASPERING AND SOMETHING UNIqUE, THE DEVELOPMENT Of STRUcTURES ASSOcIATED TO VENTRAL TUBE IN MALES WHIcH HAVE NEVER SEEN IN Denisiella .
THE GENUS Deboutevillea ALSO LAcKS TIBIOTARSAL ORGAN AND THE MALE ANTENNAE ARE VERY MODIfIED; BUT THE ELEMENTS Of ANT. II AND III fOLLOW THE fORMULA: TRI1, B1, B1 IS ONE BARBULATE SPINE, B2 TO B4 AND C1 IN THE SHAPE Of VESIcLES; ANT. IV SIMPLE IN THE MALE AND SUBSEGMENTED IN fEMALE; MUcRO WITH LARGE LAMELLAE; ONE SEcONDARY SEXUAL cHARAcTER IN LEG II IN THE fEMALE AND UNDER THE cLYPEUS Of MALE; WITH METATHORAcIc VESIcLES IN THE MALE.
Stenacidia HAS TIBIOTARSAL ORGAN AND MALE ANTENNAE VERY MODIfIED; ANT. II AND III AfTER THE fORMULA: TRI1, B1, B2, B3, B4, B6 ARE BARBULATE SPINES, B5 IS A LAMELLA, C1 SPINE SHAPED; ANT. IV SIMPLE IN BOTH SEXES, METATHORAcIc THROcANTER WITH 3 SETAE, MUcRO WITH STRAIGHT LAMELLA, ONLY ONE TOOTHED IN BOTH SEXES, WITH METATHORAcIc VESIcLES IN MALE. NO MUcRONAL SETA.
Sminthurides , THE SEcOND GENUS IN DIVERSITY Of THE fAMILY, PRESENTS TIBIOTARSAL III ORGAN AND ALSO HAS A VERY MODIfIED ANTENNA IN THE MALE, BUT THE ELEMENTS ARE ANT. II AND III NEVER WITH LAMELLA, TRI ALWAYS PRESENT, B1 OR TRI2, ANT. IV SIMPLE OR SUB SEGMENTED IN THE fEMALE, ALWAYS SIMPLE IN MALE, METATHORAcIc THROcARTER WITH 4 SETAE, THE MUcRO OfTEN WITH WIDE AND ONDULATED LAMELLA, MALES WITH METATHORcIc VESIcLE; MUcRONAL SETAE PRESENT IN BOTH SEXES.
MOST OUTSTANDING cHARAcTERS IN THE GENUS Denisiella IS THE PRESENcE Of SPEcIAL STRUcTURES ON LEGS I AND II AND WHEN cOMPARED WITH OTHER GENERA, THE TRIcHOBOTHRIA AND SETAE ARRANGEMENT ELEMENTS IN ANTENNAL SEGMENTS II AND III AS THE MODIfIED SETAE B1 TO B6 ON THE SAME TUBERcLE ON ANT. II; SETA C1 AND C3 WELL DEVELOPED, THE fIRST AS BLUNT LAMELLA AND THE SEcOND AS A STRONG SPINE ON ANT. III. FEMALES PRESENT SERRATE SETAE ON ANAL VALVES.
