Schoenoplectiella melanosperma (C.A. Mey.) Danylyk, Olshanskyi & Zhygalova View in CoL , comb. nov.
Basionym:— Scirpus melanospermus C.A. Meyer (1831: 199) View in CoL .
≡ Schoenoplectus melanospermus (C.A. Mey.) Grossheim (1928: 146) View in CoL .
≡ Scirpus supinus View in CoL L. var. melanospermus (C.A. Mey.) Schmalhausen (1897: 545) .
Type citation: “prope Astrachan ”.
Type:— RUSSIAN FEDERATION [Astrakhan], prope Astrachan ( LE).
Schoenoplectiella melanosperma View in CoL occurs mainly in Eastern Europe (central, eastern and southern parts of Ukraine, the southern part of European Russia) and Asia (Western Siberia, Kazakhstan, northwestern China) (Kreczetovitcz 1940; Poliakov 1958; Egorova 2005; Danylyk 2012).
This taxon is listed as a rare and locally protected species in some administrative regions of Ukraine, such as Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk), Kyiv and Cherkasy ( Shevchyk et al. 2006; Andrienko & Peregrym 2012), and in Voronezh Region of the Russian Federation ( Pechenyuk & Khlyzova 2011).
Schoenoplectiella melanosperma View in CoL is closely related to S. supina View in CoL (L.) Lye (2003: 27), but differs from the latter in having well-developed perianth bristles, which are more or less equal in length to the fruit. Schoenoplectiella supina View in CoL has no bristles, or they are rudimentary and barely visible ( Egorova 2005).
Schoenoplectiella melanosperma View in CoL is recognized as a distinct species (usually in Scirpus View in CoL or Schoenoplectus View in CoL ) by many authors ( Rozhevitz 1935; Kreczetovicz 1940; Poliakov 1958; Egorova 1976, 2005; Danylyk 2012); however, it should be noted that other authors ( Kreczetovicz 1941; Raynal 1976; Walters 1980; Kukkonen 1998) do not recognize it as a species, treating it either as a synonym or an infraspecific taxon.
