The holotype, a male in rather poor condition, is the only specimen known of J. rubra View in CoL . Fortunately, enough is preserved of it to facilitate the identification of the species once fresh specimens (preferably males) should be found. Both the gonostylus and the tegmen of J. rubra View in CoL are somewhat peculiar: the gonostylus has a subglobular basal portion that is more densely setose dorsally than ventrally, and a slightly elongate, evenly tapered apical portion bearing a broad tooth; the small, subtriangular tegmen is sclerotized and has unusually large apodemes (Fig. C). The ejaculatory apodeme, which in the type specimen is detached from the rest of the genitalia and embedded in some distance from it, is a normal, narrow, sclerotized rod. The eye bridge is 3–4 ommatidia long dorsally; on the flagellomeres, the subbasal setae form a regular whorl that is not intermingled with translucent sensilla; Rs and the surrounding area are not darkened (as far as visible in the dry-mounted wings); and the tarsi (of which not much is preserved) appear somewhat brighter than other leg segments.
Material examined. Holotype male, with the data as specified by Parnell (1971).
