Description. See Anker (2011).
Color in life. Semitransparent with red chromatophores throughout much of body; chromatophores densest on antennal and antennular peduncles, uropods, telson, carapace, and anterior margins of the abdominal somites where they form transverse bands; carpus and distal region of merus of major cheliped distinctly reddish; walking legs semitransparent, without chromatophores; major chela hyaline-white ( Figs. 20a, b View FIGURE 20 ; also see Anker 2011: fig. 14).
Type locality. Playa El Agallito near Chitré, Pacific coast, Panama .
Distribution. Tropical eastern Pacific region: Panama ( Anker 2011), Nicaragua ( Felder et al. 2003; present study), and Jalisco, Mexico ( Salgado-Barrágan et al. 2014).
Ecology. Obligate burrow cohabitant of callichirid ghost shrimps in the genus Lepidophthalmus : associated with L. bocourti in Mexico and Nicaragua ( Salgado-Barrágan et al. 2014; present study) and with L. natesi in Nicaragua.
Remarks. Leptalpheus hendrickxi is a morphologically distinct species that is easily distinguished from other species of Leptalpheus and related genera by the presence of strong teeth on the dorsal margin of the merus of the major cheliped and on the ventromesial margin of the merus of the minor cheliped, as well as the unique armature of the major chela. The distinct, intense red coloration of the carpus and distal portion of the merus of the major cheliped also appear to be diagnostic of this species.
16S sequence data published herein from specimens of L. hendrickxi from Nicaragua were minimally divergent from the sequence of L. hendrickxi from Mexico published by Salgado-Barrágan et al. (2017), supporting that L. hendrickxi is a single species ranging from the Pacific coast of Panama to Mexico. Our phylogenetic analysis confidently recovered (Bs = 99) L. hendrickxi as a member of the L. axianassae species group with L. axianassae , L. azuero , and L. corderoae . The results of Chow et al. (2021) also confidently recovered this clade (Bs = 100), except for L. corderoae , which was not included in their analysis. The phylogenetic position of L. hendrickxi , a species which lacks adhesive disks on the major cheliped, nested within a lineage of species with these structures, suggests that L. hendrickxi may represent a secondary loss of adhesive disks. As these structures aid in the energy storage of the cocking mechanism of the snapping claw ( Kaji et al. 2018), their potential secondary loss could result in reduced power amplification. The biomechanical, ecological, and evolutionary implications of the putative loss of adhesive disks in the major chela of L. hendrickxi is a topic worthy of future investigation.
