( Figs. 37A View FIGURE 37 , 41F View FIGURE 41 , 46F View FIGURE 46 , 51F View FIGURE 51 , 56F View FIGURE 56 , 61F View FIGURE 61 , 66F View FIGURE 66 , 71F View FIGURE 71 , 76F View FIGURE 76 )
Anthophora curta var. peritomae Cockerell, 1905a: 271 View in CoL (holotype: ♂; Alamosa, CO, USA; coll. S.A. Johnson, 6 Aug. 1903, at
Cleome ; CASENT, type 15469). Anthophora peritomae var. interspersa Cockerell, 1907a: 397 View in CoL (applied to 1905 type, same specimen as is given above). Anthophora peritomae var. tinctula Cockerell, 1907a: 397 View in CoL (holotype: female; Rociada, NM, USA; coll. W.P. Cockerell, 8 Aug.,
at Grindelia View in CoL ; CASENT, type 15470). Syn. Michener, 1951.
Diagnosis. Females are immediately identifiable for their enlarged, somewhat pointed scoop-like mandibles and almost complete lack of an inferior tooth, with no more than a weak ridge along top edge ( Fig. 41F View FIGURE 41 ). If the mandibles are worn, which is common, then they are distinctly flattened apically. Females may be otherwise determined by the following character combination: galea tessellate, dull; clypeal maculation a band of variable thickness along rim, medially extending upward to a point ( Fig. 41F View FIGURE 41 ); T1 covered in appressed setae; T2–T4 with relatively broad apical appressed setal bands, weakly to strongly undulate; T5 with appressed setae, of varying amounts; and anal fimbria blackish. Males may be determined by the following character combination: galea tessellate, dull; scape immaculate; T2–T6 with apical appressed setal bands; T7 lacking medial longitudinal ridge, lateral projections distinct and sharp, and medial projections about as sharp as lateral projections ( Fig. 61F View FIGURE 61 ).
Male description. Head: Facial maculations pale yellow to yellow-green. Galea reaching front to middle of foretrochanter in repose; medium to dark brown; strongly to moderately tessellate, with weak reflections. Mandible with inferior tooth ridge-like and nearly fully attached to main blade, running parallel to it; maculated from base to start or middle of inferior tooth ( Fig. 51F View FIGURE 51 ). Labral rim tridentate; fully maculated. Clypeal maculation a thin band, not reaching lateral sides, sometimes pointed upward, filling a third to half the height of the clypeus ( Fig. 51F View FIGURE 51 ); punctation moderately sparser within maculation than without. Paraocular area immaculate. Supraclypeal area immaculate. Scape immaculate. Mesosoma: Scutum shiny; with impunctate areas, sometimes invaded by sparse punctures. Tegula transparent to translucent, light to dark brown. Basitibial plate usually absent; rarely weakly present, obscured by setae if so. Metasoma: T1 with slight apical appressed setal band, setae sparser basally; T2–T6 with apical setal bands, often weak on T6. Terga strongly to moderately tessellate between punctures, only weakly reflective if at all; not apparent through appressed setae. Tergal rims transparent, tan to light brown. Male T7 ( Fig. 61F View FIGURE 61 ) without medial longitudinal carina, rarely weakly present as impunctate line rather than raised carina; lateral projections strongly recurved, sharp; medial projections relatively thin, tips relatively sharp. Male S5 ( Figs. 38A, 38C View FIGURE 38 ) setal arrangement unremarkable, without large, distinctive patches, at most longer along rim. Male S6 ( Fig. 38A View FIGURE 38 ) clearly medially emarginate. Male S7 ( Fig. 66F View FIGURE 66 ) with setae absent or nearly so around midpoint of length; widening from midpoint to tip, apical half widest at pointed lateral tips; apical half vaguely resembling owl head, rim broadly emarginate between lateral tips. Male S8 ( Fig. 71F View FIGURE 71 ) lateral projections distinct; medial projection narrowing to tip, apically emarginate. Male genital capsule ( Fig. 76F View FIGURE 76 ) with outer corners, where gonocoxite tips curve inward, marked by low flange without clear angle, best seen in profile; from corner to apex, in profile, gonocoxite with two slight bumps and distinct concavity before tip; tip, in profile, rounded and moderately curved ventrally, with minor dorsal projection clearly pointed; gonostylus tip position slightly exceeding that of gonocoxite, measured from above along primary axis of latter. Pubescence: See Fig. 56F View FIGURE 56 . Appears dark gray overall, sometimes brownish. Setae slightly tan to dorsally and lighter toward venter, except as follows: vertex and scutum often, but not always, with some dark intermixed; leg inner faces orange; tergal basal zones dark.
Female similar to male, except: Head: Mandible main blade enlarged into huge scoop; inferior tooth a mere corner, easily missed; maculated for under half of total length ( Fig. 41F View FIGURE 41 ). Labral rim rounded. Clypeal maculation thicker, often surpassing half of clypeal height medially ( Fig. 41F View FIGURE 41 ). Mesosoma: Midtibial spur apically curved; tan to orange. Basitibial plate circular distally, teardropped overall. Metasoma: T1–T4 with thicker apical appressed setal bands; T5 with appressed setae, sometimes reduced. T4 impunctate rim of moderate to extended length medially, roughly triangular. Anal fimbria strongly triangular, covering clearly over third and usually nearly half of T5 length medially. Pubescence: See Fig. 46F View FIGURE 46 . Vertex and scutum usually darker; hindbasitarsal brush medium to dark brown; anal fimbria black to dark brown, sometimes invaded by light below; S5 dark apicomedially, usually obscured by light.
Distribution. See Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 . Found throughout much of west, typically montane in hotter areas, occupying broader range of environments in colder areas. Present in USA: Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, California, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, likely Oregon, likely Washington, likely Texas, possibly South Dakota, possibly Nebraska, possibly Oklahoma; Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan; Mexico: possibly Chihuahua. Ecoregional habitance is as follows, based on 837 specimen records: 15 ecoregions total: Colorado Plateau shrublands (609=74.8%), Great Basin shrub steppe (71=8.7%), Wasatch and Uinta montane forests (29=3.6%), Wyoming Basin shrub steppe (24=2.9%), Colorado Rockies forests (24=2.9%), Arizona Mountains forests (12=1.5%), Northern mixed grasslands (12=1.5%), Chihuahuan Desert (11=1.4%), Northern short grasslands (10=1.2%), Mojave Desert (4≤1%), Western short grasslands (3≤1%), Snake-Columbia shrub steppe (2≤1%), Sonoran Desert (1≤1%), Eastern Cascades forests (1≤1%), Okanagan dry forests (1≤1%).
Phenology. Recorded from April–October, almost exclusively late summer and fall, most common in August– October. Likely univoltine, few spring records suggestive of opportunistic emergence.
Nesting biology. Anthophora peritomae has been recorded nesting vertically in both tightly-packed sand and sandstone ( Torchio 1971; Orr et al. 2016). Further details on these new records will be presented in a subsequent review of the group’s nesting biology.
Floral specialization. Specialist on Asteraceae , with great breadth, likely enabling its large distribution. Primary recorded visits by 296 females include: Family Asteraceae (100% [others constitute <1%]); Genus Chrysothamnus (33%), Ericameria (21%), “ Aster ” (13%) [“ Aster ” was used prior to recent taxonomic changes, can refer to a number of genera]; Species Ericameria nauseosa (19%). 510 total floral records from four families include: Asteraceae (211 ♂ 294 ♀): Aster chilensis 3 ♂ 6 ♀, Aster falcatus 2 ♂ 14 ♀, Aster glaucodes 1 ♀, Aster sp. 4 ♂ 19 ♀, Asteraceae sp. 3 ♂ 8 ♀, Asteraceae sp. 4 ♂ 13 ♀, Centaurea repens 1 ♂, Centaurea sp. 2 ♀, Chaenactis sp. 1 ♂, Chrysothamnus depressus 6 ♂ 16 ♀, Chrysothamnus greenei 9 ♂, Chrysothamnus linifolius 9 ♂ 17 ♀, Chrysothamnus sp. 43 ♂ 49 ♀, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus 13 ♂ 14 ♀, Ericameria nauseosa 44 ♂ 57 ♀, Ericameria parryi 3 ♂ 4 ♀, Ericameria sp. 3 ♂ 2 ♀, Erigeron divergens 1 ♀, Erigeron sp. 3 ♂ 3 ♀, Grindelia sp. 3 ♂ 5 ♀, Grindelia squarrosa 7 ♂ 6 ♀, Gutierrezia sarothrae 2 ♂, Gutierrezia sp. 2 ♀, Helianthus petiolaris 1 ♂, Helianthus sp. 3 ♀, Heterotheca villosa 9 ♂ 15 ♀, Hymenoxys sp. 2 ♂, Machaeranthera canescens 9 ♂ 19 ♀, Machaeranthera tanacetifolia 3 ♂ 1 ♀, Senecio douglasii 11 ♀, Senecio hartianus 1 ♂, Senecio sp. 1 ♂, Senecio spartioides 10 ♂ 5 ♀, Silphium sp. 2 ♂, Solidago canadensis 1 ♂, Stephanomeria exigua 3 ♂, Stephanomeria sp. 2 ♂, Stephanomeria tenuifolia 4 ♂ 1 ♀, Cleomaceae (1 ♂ 1 ♀): Cleome lutea 1 ♂, Cleome serrulata 1 ♀, Fabaceae (1 ♂): Trifolium sp. 1 ♂, Polygonaceae (2 ♂): Eriogonum corymbosum 1 ♂, Eriogonum puberulum 1 ♂.
Comments. This is the only confirmed communal species of A. ( Micranthophora ) ( Torchio 1971). It may be that selection to work together and share costs was exerted by the hardness of sandstone, which this species excavates. Further study of other species is necessary to determine whether or not the communal behavior of A. peritomae is truly unique. This is one of few A. ( Micranthophora ) for which predation has been documented; a single male bee is pinned with a Phidippus Koch male ( Salticidae ) from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (BBSL414081).
