Diagnosis. Males may be determined by the following character combination: T5–T6 without appressed setae; T7 without medial longitudinal carina, lateral projections distinct and sharp, and medial projections well-separated and apically rounded ( Fig. 62A ); and S6 with apicomedial square of transparent integument ( Fig. 38C ). Females may be determined by the following character combination: body length typically under 9 mm; facial maculations yellow to yellow-green ( Fig. 42A ); mandible with inferior tooth small but distinct, slightly angled off main blade near tip ( Fig. 42A ); clypeal maculation banding rim up to at most slightly beyond half of clypeal height ( Fig. 42A ); supraclypeus most often maculated, but amorphously so, not rectangular or nearing full area; scutum shiny, with impunctate areas; terga shiny, often visible through relatively sparse appressed setae; T1–T4 covered with appressed setae; anal fimbria usually clearly triangular; and S5 with light setae along rim.

Male description. Head: Facial maculations somewhat richly yellow to yellow-green. Galea usually reaching between front and rear of forecoxa in repose; medium to dark brown; moderately tessellate to nearly smooth, with moderate to relatively strong reflections. Mandible with inferior tooth narrowly ovular, slightly angled off main blade or near parallel to it; maculated from base to start or past middle of inferior tooth ( Fig. 52A ). Labral rim tridentate. Clypeal maculation variable but typically a band, usually nearly reaching lateral sides, usually filling a third or less of clypeal height ( Fig. 52A ); punctation significantly to moderately sparser within maculation than without. Paraocular area immaculate. Supraclypeal area typically maculated; amorphous, small, never a transverse bar. Scape maculated; almost always fully maculated along length below. Mesosoma: Scutum shiny; with small to large impunctate areas, sometimes invaded by sparse punctures. Tegula transparent to translucent, tan to medium brown. Basitibial plate present; relatively weak, somewhat poorly defined along rim, often obscured by setae. Metasoma: T1 covered in appressed setae, sometimes sparser medially; T2–T4 almost always with only apical appressed setal bands; T5–T6 without appressed setae. Terga smooth to weakly tessellate between punctures, with strong reflections; apparent through appressed setae. Tergal rims transparent, tan to clear. Male T7 ( Fig. 62A ) without medial longitudinal carina, though sometimes vaguely impunctate, often with dense setae and punctation obscuring; lateral projections moderately recurved, sharp but somewhat triangularly so; medial projections of moderate length, gradually narrowing to broadly rounded tips. Male S5 ( Figs. 38A, 38C ) setal arrangement unremarkable, without large, distinctive patches, at most longer along rim. Male S6 ( Fig. 38C ) nearly entire medially, filled by nearly square transparent integumental rim there. Male S7 ( Fig. 67A ) with setae absent or nearly so around midpoint of length; widening from midpoint to tip, apical half widest clearly before rounded lateral tips; apical half hexagonal, rim rounded outward, with shallow medial emargination. Male S8 ( Fig. 72A ) lateral projections reduced but distinct; medial projection narrowing to tip, apically emarginate. Male genital capsule ( Fig. 77A ) with outer corners, where gonocoxite tips curve inward, marked by obvious flange of about 90 degrees or greater, best seen in profile; from corner to apex, in profile, gonocoxite relatively unmodified, concave or straight; tip, in profile, rounded and weakly curved ventrally; gonostylus tip position significantly exceeding that of gonocoxite, measured from above along primary axis of latter. Pubescence: See Fig. 57A . Appears light to medium gray overall. Setae white, though often slightly off-white dorsally, except as follows: vertex and scutum with or without highly variable dark intermix; leg inner faces orangish; tergal basal zones dark; sternal color variable, sometimes with some dark.

Female similar to male, except: Head: Mandible with inferior tooth ridge-like, weakly angled off main blade ( Fig. 42A ). Labral rim rounded; fully maculated. Clypeal maculation usually stronger, filling third to half of clypeal height medially and sometimes projecting upward past that there ( Fig. 42A ). Scape immaculate. Mesosoma: Midtibial spur apically curved; tan to orange. Basitibial plate circular distally, teardropped overall. Metasoma: T1–T4 covered in appressed setae; T5 with or without appressed setae, if present then not fully obscuring surface below. T4 impunctate rim of short to moderate length medially, distinct but not triangular. Anal fimbria at least vaguely triangular, sometimes sparse and obscure proximally, usually covering less than third of T5 length medially (slightly more prounounced than in Fig. 37B ). Pubescence: See Fig. 47A . Leg inner faces more often orangish brown; hindbasitarsal brush light to dark brown; anal fimbria dark brown to blackish; sterna often with tan to light brown, never dark brown to blackish except apicomedially on S5, which S5 is hidden and not apparent unless carefully searched for.

Distribution. See Fig. 24 . Found throughout much of west, often somewhat montane in hottest areas, occupying much broader range of environments in colder areas, less montane. Present in USA: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, likely Oregon, likely Montana, possibly Oklahoma; Mexico: Baja California Norte, Chihuahua, likely Sonora, possibly Coahuila. Ecoregional habitance is as follows, based on 3482 specimen records: 17 ecoregions total: Colorado Plateau shrublands (1654=47.5%), Mojave Desert (855=24.6%), Great Basin shrub steppe (456=13.1%), Chihuahuan Desert (214=6.1%), Sonoran Desert (173=5%), California montane chaparral and woodlands (37=1.1%), Colorado Rockies forests (22≤1%), California coastal sage and chaparral (21≤1%), Snake-Columbia shrub steppe (11≤1%), Sierra Nevada forests (10≤1%), Sierra Madre Occidental pine-oak forests (9≤1%), Wasatch and Uinta montane forests (5≤1%), Arizona Mountains forests (5≤1%), California Central Valley grasslands (4≤1%), Western short grasslands (2≤1%), California interior chaparral and woodlands (2≤1%), South Central Rockies forests (1≤1%).

Phenology. Recorded from March–November, highly dependent on region, usually emerging earlier in warmer regions. Bivoltine in most areas, only univoltine at highest elevations, and potentially trivoltine under ideal conditions.

Nesting biology. Anthophora petrophila has been collected nesting in horizontal and vertical, hard-packed silt deposits by the first author. Phil Torchio also collected this species nesting in vertical, silty banks, although this was never published and the site could not be located due to unsufficient notetaking. At one new site near Moab, Utah, it was confirmed that this species reuses old nests via observation that a single female was using a nest in which six unprovisioned cells were excavated. Further details on these new records will be presented in a subsequent review of the group’s nesting biology.

Floral specialization. Reported as a specialist on Asteraceae ( Moldenke & Neff 1974) . Appears true, with great breadth, likely enabling its large distribution. Primary recorded visits by 1007 females include: Family Asteraceae (86%); Genus Ericameria (28%), Chrysothamnus (13%), Chaenactis (12%); Species Ericameria nauseosa (23%). 1666 total floral records Comments. This is the most widespread, common species of A. ( Micranthophora ). In part a consequence of its commonness, a very rare labral deformity was recently discovered and described from this species; the specimen’s labrum was reduced to a mere dot and its clypeus was enlarged, encircling the reduced labrum ( Orr & Tripodi 2017). The wide range of this species raises the question of whether it may, in fact, be multiple species. Although additional work may demonstrate that it is a species-complex, morphological and preliminary infraspecific molecular work have not supported this. Note that this species is very commonly confused with A. exigua by prior authors, and that MCO determinations prior to 2013 may also be suspect. Several males of this species have been separately observed resting overnight on plants via their mandibles (typically on Asteraceae or Asteraceae-adjacent plants).
