Female. Body length 26.9 mm (19.2 mm 36.3 mm); forewing length 20.2 mm; Structure. More less straightlower margin of clypeus with lateral margins punctured; interantennal area densely and coarsely punctured; frons with scattered punctate; vertex and gena scattered punctate; mesosoma coarsely and scattered punctate; anterior face densely and coarsely punctured and posterior face of propodeum coarsely and scattered; hind tibial spurs acute; metasoma scattered and coarsely punctured; S2 with two tubercules; pygidium with strong a tooth-like projection on each lateral margin. Color. Setae entirely black; metanotum rarely with yellow spot; T2–T3, T2–T4, T1–T4 or T1–T5 with yellow spots on each side, or without spots; wings dark with violaceous reflections ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 ).

Male. Body length 21.1 mm (range 14.5 mm – 26.6 mm); forewing length 17.3 mm; Structure. Clypeus, interantennal area, frons, vertex and gena densely and coarsely punctured; mesosoma densely and coarsely punctured; propodeum densely and coarsely punctured; metasoma densely and coarsely punctured; S2 with two tubercules. Genitalia ( Fig. 43C View FIGURE 43 ). Parameres more or less straight, ventral face polished with some sparse setae in the margin; volsellae with short sparse setae. Color. Resembling females also; rarely pronotum with a yellow spot on each side ( Fig. 29 View FIGURE 29 ).

Valid subspecies. Scolia guttata var. eximia Smith, 1855 is differentiated by body entirely black ( Bartlett 1912).

Distribution. NA and NT. Mexico: Chiapas, Coahuila Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Nayarit Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz ( Map 7 View MAP 7 ). Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, United States of America and Venezuela ( Cameron 1893; Barlett 1912; MacKay 1987; Añino et al. 2020).
