Diagnosis: Body with transverse annulations; protruding caudal vacuole present; contractile vacuole absent; oral ciliature simple, composed only of an incomplete circumoral kinety; somatic kinetids generally forming transverse rows; perioral kineties composed of several transverse rings.

Etymology: The genus name Parametacystis is a composite of the Greek adjective para- (beside) and the genus name Metacystis , alluding to the similarity of these two genera. Feminine gender.

Type species: Parametacystis pulchra gen. nov., sp. nov.
