Range:— Northern Mexico; southern Peru to southern Chile and Argentina; southeastern Brazil; southern Australia, New Zealand; islands of southern Pacific and southern Atlantic. In Bolivia in CH, CO, LP, SC, TA.
Ecology:— Common; terrestrial, forming large colonies in pastures and meadows, also in humid to semihumid forests, e.g., those formed by Polylepis Ruiz & Pav. ; 2300–4300 m, to sea level in south of range. Among the most frost-resistant species of the family, surviving temperatures down to -20°C ( Bannister & Fagan 1989). Additionally, it is well adapted to high levels of UV radiation ( Saldana et al. 2010).
