Phoracantha discreta Pascoe, 1863: 155 View in CoL .

Allotisis discreta Pascoe, 1867: 142 View in CoL , pl. 3, ®gure 1; Aurivillius, 1917: 5; Carter, 1929: 132; McKeown, 1947: 32.

Diagnosis and recognition

Body length: male, 8.7±12.1 mm; female, 9.5±13.9 mm.

Anteclypeus, labrum, basal mandibles, maxillary and labial palpi, antennae and legs reddish brown, remaining parts dark reddish brown or blackish brown. Elytra with two slightly raised whitish yellow ivory fasciae: one in middle or slightly in front of middle, more or less straight, fairly wide, reaching neither external margin nor suture, and one at sub-base, zigzag, much narrower than medial one, broken into three spots on each elytron in most cases; the fasciae covering between basal 1.5/10±1.9/10 and apical 4.5/10± 4.8/10; a fairly large whitish oval spot on disc before apex (®gure 12).

Head narrower than prothorax; prothorax slightly longer than wide. No carinae between antennal tubercles; distance between lower lobes of eyes twice as long as or slightly less than twice distance between antennal socket and lateral angle of post clypeus, and more than 1.5 times but less than twice distance between upper lobes of eyes. Antennae distinctly longer than body in male but slightly longer than body in female; segments 3±6 with very small apical spines; segment 3 much more than seven times its apical spine and distinctly longer than scape, segment 4 but slightly longer than segment 5; scape not grooved above. Pronotum rugged, rugose and un-nitid, with ®ve distinctly raised and two slightly raised nodules on disc: one at centre, suboval, and three on each side, anterior pair just before middle, large and of irregular form, medial pair behind middle, very small (sometimes vague), and posterior pair at sub-base, large and subround; the interspace of nodules with sparse punctures, each producing a long pale erect hair, and with fairly dense or sparse pale depressed hairs; very prominent but rounded tubercles at lateral sides. Elytra subparallel or slightly tapering, nitid, slightly less than three times (in male) or slightly more than three times (in female) length of prothorax; apex truncate without processes or spines; basal half of disc with dense, large and deep punctures, about one-quarter of the punctures producing long yellowish brown erect hairs; apical half of disc with fairly dense, small and shallow punctures, producing fairly dense but very short pale depressed hairs and sparse long yellowish brown erect hairs. Abdomen with fairly sparse punctures and depressed hairs.

Male terminalia. Apex of median lobe sharply pointed. Unspined region of internal sac slightly more than 1.2 times as long as spined region; spined region divided into two sections: ®rst section absent; second section slightly wider than basal part of third section, with dense simple large and long spines and simple small and long spines; third section about 3.5 times as long as second section, with dense simple large and long spines and basally forked spines; a small area between second and third sections unspined (®gure 26). Eighth sternite rounded at sides; setae absent in mid-terminal area; very sparse microspines on ventral surface. Apex of eighth tergite distinctly processed.

Ovipositor. As in ®gure 27.

Variation

In some specimens, the fasciae may be wider so that they are very close to each other.

Biology

Hosts unknown. Adults were collected in February, September, November and December.

Distribution

North-eastern New South Wales and south-eastern and far northern Queensland (®gure 3).

Comments

This species resembles A. furva sp. nov. but diOEers in having all nodules except medial one on disc of pronotum granulose and rugose; the apex of the elytron truncate without spine or tooth at marginal angle; ivory fasciae less developed.

This species is determined based on Pascoe’s original description (1863) and ®gure (1867).

Type and other material examined

HOLOTYPE, previously deposited in BMNH, was lost recently on its way to Australia. The other two specimens with name A. discreta in BMNH are not A. discreta because they do not agree with the ®gure and description provided by Pascoe (1863, 1867). The locality of the holotype is Sydney.
