4. Lychnophorella leucodendron (Matffeld) Loeuille, Semir & Pirani , comb. nov. Eremanthus leucodendron Matffeld (1925: 378) . Vernonia leucodendron (Matff.) MacLeish (1984b: 134) . Type:— BRAZIL. Bahia : Rio de Contas, Serra das Almas, carrasco, 1600 m, August 1913, P. von Lützelburg 242 (lectotype: M, first-step lectotype designated by MacLeish (1984b:134), second-step lectotype designated here M e! [M0029441]; isolectotypes: B †, GH [GH00006591], M e! [M0029446]) ( Fig. 29 C–D ).

Distribution and habitat: — Brazil ( Bahia , endemic to the Serra do Sincorá and Catolés area, Chapada Diamantina ). Campo rupestre; 1000–1800 m.

Taxonomic Notes: —This species is easily recognized by its densely lanate robust stems and concolored leaves. Putative polyploids have been encountered showing a more robust habit and 10–15 florets per capitulum (instead of 5). Similar to Lychnophorella santosii Robinson (1980a: 95) , but L. leucodendron is easily set apart by its concolorous leaves (vs. discolorous), capitula arranged in a dichasium of glomerules (vs. syncephalium), number of florets per capitulum (5 vs. 1–5), cylindrical cypselae with stramineous pappus (vs. prismatic cypselae with reddish pappus).
