Diagnosis. This species is similar to members of the Eugoa bipunctata group in the male genitalia: uncus distinct with three projections; tegumen flat; valvae wide, covered with setae; pubescent ampullae at the base of valvae. Only two species of E. bipunctata group ( Bucsek 2008), E. bipunctata Walker and E. zolotuhini Dubatolov & Bucsek , are closely allied to the new species (see, Bucsek 2008: 430, figs. 82, 84; Dubatolov & Bucsek 2016: 234, fig. 33). However, E. arguta n. sp. differs from allied species in the three protuberances of uncus, which are broader and rounded (with three protuberances, apical one tapering, another medial two rounded in E. bipunctata ; with three protuberances, apical one slender, about three times longer than another triangular, sub-basal two protuberances in E. zolotuhini ); apex of valvae roundly rectangular, blunt, and weakly dentated (before apex of valvae sharply angled, and weakly dentated in E. bipunctata ; apex of valvae with two short, triangular, asymmetrical processes in E. zolotuhini ); and aedeagus vesica with two weakly sclerotized, irregular plates and scobinated (a large, bent cornutus and scobinated in E. bipunctata ; sclerotized, curved, finger-shaped process, and a group of small spines, and one strong cornutus in E. zolotuhini ).
Description ( Figs. 8a, b View FIGURES 5–8 ). Wingspan 11–13 mm in male, 13–14 mm in female. Head fuscous gray, mottled with dark brown. Patagium, tegula and thorax fuscous gray, mottled with dark brown, plus dark brown patches. Proximal area of forewing pale gray, mottled with brown; distal area fuscous brown in male, more dark in female; incomprehensible two patches in basal; antemedial line distinctly dark brown; two dark asymmetrical discoidal spots; a dark subterminal line in a zigzag pattern; cilia pale yellowish, mixed with dark scales. Hindwing pale yellowish, mottled with gray brownish at apex in male, at distal area in female; cilia white yellowish.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 26–31 ). Uncus finger-shaped, broadened medially, apex rounded, slightly curved inwards, with weak setae, almost same length with tegumen. Tegumen with dorsal shoulders on tegumen branches, lateral margin covered with short setae. Valvae broadly elongate, heavily setose; apex rectangular, weakly dentate; costal margin membranous weakly swollen; ampullae short and pubescent. Juxta tapered, weakly sclerotized. Saccus reduced. Aedeagus short, stout, slightly curved, distal half weakly sclerotized and with small apical spines. Vesica with two weakly sclerotized, irregular plates, scobinated.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 47 View FIGURES 45–50 ). Papillae anales weakly covered with setae. Lamella antevaginalis “U”-shaped, with two finger-shaped and weakly sclerotized apical and “U”-shaped projections, with sclerotized short spines on inner surface; lamella postvaginalis with a pair sclerotized, semicircular plates. Ductus bursae broad, tube-shaped, membranous. Corpus bursae ovoid, heavily covered with thin spines throughout the bursae.
Distribution. Cambodia (Cardamom, Kulen, Osam, Pramaoy, Pursat, Samkos).
Etymology. The species name is derived from the Latin, argutus (made clear), denoting resemblance, refers to its more distinct color of forewing markings.
