Spilosoma affinis Bartel, 1903: 185 .
Spilosoma lutescens Walker, 1855 ; Hampson, 1920: 394. Type locality: Deutsch Ost-Afrika [ Tanzania], Uhehe, Iringa. Range: Tanzania.
Material examined. Syntype ɗ and genitalia preparation, Spilosoma affinis Bartel / D. O.-Afrika [ Tanzania], Uhehe, Iringa, I-III.99, Götze S. / 3 / Type / 41295 ( ZMB). Bartel (1903) described affinis from two males. To stabilize the nomenclature and remove any confusion as to the identity of this species, the specimen (herein illustrated, Figure 15 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ) bearing the label “41295” is here designated LECTOTYPE and the remaining syntype ( ZMB) bearing the label “41296” is here designated PARALECTOTYPE.
Description. Forewing ɗ 19–20mm. Male. Similar to tanzanica but wings overall much paler, almost semihyaline. Abdomen of specimen #41295 (ZMB) is no longer attached to the specimen and not shown to be mounted on the genitalia slide. [Abdomen orange yellow above and grey below with the exception of a small stripe at the tip. Segments 3 to 6 have regular black banding. At the sides there is a line of little black dots which appear barely noticeable on a grey background.] Genitalia: As tanzanica but the juxta is wider and the two long straight narrow extensions reaching at least half length of the uncus. The valva is wider, flatter and apically more setose and the small triangular-like dorsolateral process is much reduced and positioned at approximately half length of valva. Female. Unknown.
