Holotypes. Alitocoris brunneus : HONDURAS, intercepted on orchids at New Orleans, 5.VI.1941 by inspectors of the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, type USNM 59344. Alitocoris manni : GUATEMALA, Palin, V.1924, W. M. Mann, type USNM 59345 .
Diagnosis. General color brown, with few pale maculae; punctures dark brown ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2–5 ). Antennae 5-segmented.
Head. Vertex tumescent. Antennal tubercles hidden by the anteocular processes; antennae brown, 5-segmented, first segment with a dorsal pale macula and fifth segment light brown; second segment the shortest, proportion between remainder segments differs in males and in females. Ventrally with 1+1 longitudinal pale carinae posterior to the eyes; apex of mandibular plates pale. Labium pale, reaching anterior margin of abdominal segment VI; proportion of labial segments: I<II>III≈IV.
Thorax. Anterior angles of pronotum surpassing lateral margins of eyes by twice the ocelli diameter. Scutellum with light spots, sometimes with pale maculae on foveae; apex without punctures. Corium reaching half of connexival segment VI; light spots more numerous on exocorium than on the rest of the corium; pale maculae at apex of radial vein sometimes inconspicuous. Membrane reaching apex of abdomen, with six to eight veins. Pro-, meso-, and metapleurae with pale maculae, denser on ventral margins of pronotum. Metapleural evaporatorium brown, peritreme attaining half of evaporatorium length. Legs pale, with light brown spots on entire femora and dorsally on tibiae.
Abdomen. Segments of connexivum with pale maculae medially, extending ventrally. Abdomen velvety ventrally, sometimes with pale maculae on its lateral thirds; punctures inconspicuous.
Male. Proportion of antennal segments: I≈II<III>IV<V. Measurements. (n=7): head length, 1.61 ± 0.06 (1.50– 1.70); width, 2.06 ± 0.09 (1.90–2.15); pronotum length, 2.04 ± 0.09 (1.90–2.20); width, 4.74 ± 0.25 (4.45–5.10); scutellum length, 3.34 ± 0.16 (3.05–3.50); width, 2.79 ± 0.15 (2.55–3.00); length of antennal segments: I, 0.58 ± 0.03 (0.55–0.60); II, 0.36 ± 0.06 (0.30–0.45); III, 1.34 ± 0.15 (1.15–1.60); IV, 1.15 ± 0.06 (1.10–1.25); V, 1.54 ± 0.10 (1.45–1.70); length of labial segments: I, 1.04 ± 0.08 (0.95–1.20); II, 1.82 ± 0.06 (1.75–1.95); III, 1.29 ± 0.08 (1.20–1.40); IV, 1.26 ± 0.10 (1.15–1.45); total length, 8.06 ± 0.34 (7.53–8.52); abdominal width, 4.71 ± 0.24 (4.40–5.11).
Genitalia. Enlarged margin of dorsal rim broad and low. Foliaceus projection of the inferior layer of ventral rim subrectangular with mesial margins deeply reflected giving an aspect of a mesial projection on dorsal view; lateral margins tumescent close to posterolateral angles ( Figs 6, 8 View FIGURES 6–18 ). Carinae of segment X close to apex and well developed ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6–18 ). Median conical projection of inferior layer of ventral rim low and flat ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6–18 ). Parameres: dorsal lobe of head the smallest, bearing a tuft of setae denser on posterior margin; ventral lobe twice the length of dorsal lobe, rounded and ventrally projected, bearing a tuft of long setae on apex ( Figs 16–18 View FIGURES 6–18 ). Phallus. Dorsal projection of phallotheca bilobed in profile, basal lobe acute and projected, apical lobe truncated ( Figs 13, 15 View FIGURES 6–18 ). Vesica enlarged at base, with basal lateral projections short and truncated at apex ( Figs 12–13 View FIGURES 6–18 ); and 1+1 spatulated projections laterad to ductus seminis distalis ( Figs 13–15 View FIGURES 6–18 , vp) with acute apex. Ductus seminis distalis sinuous and long, surpassing basal margin of phallotheca; apex jagged ( Figs 13–15 View FIGURES 6–18 ).
Female. Proportion of antennal segments: I≈II<III≈IV<V. Measurements (n=8): head length, 1.67 ± 0.11 (1.50– 1.80); width, 2.11 ± 0.06 (2.05–2.20); pronotum length, 2.07 ± 0.08 (1.95–2.20); width, 4.86 ± 0.26 (4.45–5.25); scutellum length, 3.49 ± 0.19 (3.15–3.70); width, 2.88 ± 0.17 (2.65–3.05); length of the antennal segments: I, 0.58 ± 0.05 (0.50–0.65); II, 0.38 ± 0.07 (0.25–0.50); III, 1.18 ± 0.09 (1.10–1.30); IV, 1.14 ± 0.08 (1.05–1.30); V, 1.57 ± 0.09 (1.50–1.75); length of the labial segments: I, 1.03 ± 0.08 (0.95–1.15); II, 1.83 ± 0.08 (1.75–1.95); III, 1.28 ± 0.11 (1.15–1.45); IV, 1.19 ± 0.17 (0.80–1.35); total length, 8.48 ± 0.55 (7.74–9.09); abdominal width, 5.01 ± 0.32 (4.62–5.47).
Genitalia. Genital plates velvety, except for glossy calluses. Gonocoxites VIII subrectangular, posterior margin bisinuous, sutural angles slightly projected; calluses rough with few punctures, projected over the base of laterotergites VIII and directed to lateral angle of laterotergites IX; surface between calluses and sutural margins corrugated equal to half of the callus width; sutural margins expanded ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 21–27 ). Gonocoxites IX projected externally between laterotergites IX; cup-shaped internally, with lateral margins attaining the mesial carina ( Figs 21, 25 View FIGURES 21–27 ). Mesial margins of laterotergites IX juxtaposed on basal half. Thickening of vaginal intima subrectangular. Proximal portion of ductus receptaculi as wide as middle portion of median duct of vesicular area. Vesicular area three times longer than pars intermedialis plus capsula seminalis; median duct enlarged at base, globose. Distal portion of ductus receptaculi short, about 1/3 the length of vesicular area. Pars intermedialis four times longer than capsula seminalis; anterior and posterior annular crests perpendicular to pars intermedialis. Capsula seminalis globose, with thin basal processes ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 21–27 ).
Remarks. Alloeogyna brunnea (Sailer) comb. nov. is the only species in the genus with five-segmented antennae. Diagnostic characters for All. brunnea comb. nov. are: the labium reaching abdominal segment VI, the more projected callosities of gonocoxites VIII ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 21–27 ), and the subrectangular foliaceus projection of the inferior layer of ventral rim. The pygophore is smaller and somewhat more opened than in All. poecila sp. nov., from whom All. brunnea comb. nov. can also be differentiated by: the deeply reflected mesial margin of the foliaceus projection of ventral rim; the enlarged margin of dorsal rim broad and low; the lateral carinae of segment X more developed ( Figs 6–8 View FIGURES 6–18 ); the internal shape of the gonocoxites IX and laterotergites IX; and by the globose enlargement at the base of the median duct of vesicular area ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 21–27 ).
