Diagnosis. Body deep (10–19% SL); 25–35 small scales in a oblique row; anal fin-rays 92–103; eye diameter about 3–4 times in snout length; pectoral-fin rays 24–28; otolith large (8 mm in a 250 mm SL specimen), anterior gill arch with 11–16 long rakers.
Distribution. Circumglobal, except East Pacific, at depths from 1035 to 4420 m ( Nielsen & Merrett 2000).
Remarks. Collected from several stations off Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, from 1051 to 2271 m depth. Previously reported off southeastern and southern Brazil by Séret & Andreata (1992) and Nielsen & Merrett (2000). The specimens identified by Séret & Andreata (1992) as Bassozetus sp. were reidentified by Nielsen & Merrett (2000) as B. compressus , B. normalis , and B. robustus .
