Foveodromica Cassola, 2002 (Mem. Soc. Entomol. It. 81: 13)
This genus was created and described by Cassola (2002) when performed the revision of the Dromica genus. It is represented in Angola by 11 species (two of them new to science and under description yet, P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica auropunctata (Quedenfeldt, 1883) (Berl. Ent. Zeitschr. 27: 249)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Malange (=Malanje) (MALANJE) (131), Holotype ♀, MNHN.
—Chiyaka (=Tchiacana) (BENGUELA) (251); Chipeyo (=Chipeio, Pedra do) (BENGUELA) (253) [Wellman & Horn 1908 sub Dromica (Cosmena) auropunctata ].
—Bimbi (=Bimbe) (HUAMBO) (210) [Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956; Ferreira 1965; all sub Dromica (Cosmena) auropunctata ].
—Benguela (BENGUELA) (251) (Ferreira 1965, ibidem).
—Tchivinguire (=Tchivinguiro, Chão da Chela) (HUILA) (355) (Werner 2000a). New localities reported: 10 km SW Cacula (HUILA) (337) (P. Schüle pers. comm.). Remarks. A species collected in Malanje by Major von Mechow for the first time. Later on it was discovered
in other localities of Angola, country from where it seems proper in the central Provinces (north of Huilla and
Benguela to Malanje). Wellman & Horn (1908) referred that “this species may be found in rather thick bush, and
when pursued will hide under dry leaves like ants, which insects it greatly resembles in its movements”. In Cacula
it was collected during day in open secondary forest (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica bicostulata W. Horn, 1913 [Arch. Naturg. 79 (A11): 9]
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Bailundo (HUAMBO) (232), 1 ♀, SDEI.
New localities reported: 12 km E Cuito (=Silva Porto) (BIÉ) (235) (P. Schüle pers. comm.). Remarks. An Angolan tiger beetle endemic species. The single holotype female specimen was only known so
far (Werner 2000a; Cassola 2002). However, adults of this species were sampled recently (9.XI.2011) near Cuito in
an open secondary forest, natural meadows and arable fields (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica grossula (W. Horn, 1913) (Arch. Naturgesch. 79, A11: 12)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Angola (without localities), 2 ♂, 1♀, SDEI.
—Ganda (BENGUELA) (278) [Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956; Ferreira 1965 all sub Dromica (Cosmena) grossula ]. —Caconda (HUILA) (299) (Werner 2000a sub D. grossula ).
New localities reported: 75 km N Caconda (near Cuima), 75 km NE Caconda (HUAMBO) (280); 30 km N Cacula, 3,5 km SW Negola, 10 km W Negola, 20 km S Caluquembe (HUILA) (317); 10 km SW Cacula, (HUILA) (337) (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Remarks. An endemic species of Angola described by Horn (1913) based on specimens of V. Plason collection, a collector from Vienna (Werner 2000a). The new localities here reported increases our knowledge on the distribution of this species in Angola. The Caconda region seems to be the core territory of F. grossula . The adults are active during day in open secondary forest (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica humeralis (W. Horn, 1913) (Rev. Zool. Afr. 2: 277)
Distribution in Angola Old records:
— Type locality: Bailundo (HUAMBO), 1♂, 1♀, SDEI.
—Bailundo (HUAMBO) (232) (Werner 2000a).
New localities reported: 12 km E Cuito (=Silva Porto) and 50 km NEE Cuito (near Chissemba Mission) (BIÉ) (235) (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola. Cassola (2002) refers that apparently only the two type specimens are known so far, but that a male specimen of Werner collection labelled “Bailundo” was figured in his book (Fig. 162 in Werner 2000a). The new localities here reported are close to the known “old” ones on the distribution of this species in Angola. Adults were sampled during day in open secondary forest (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica juengeri (Cassola, 1985) ( Redia 68: 33)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Calulo, 10º 01´S, 15º 05´E (KWANZA SUL) (128), 3♀, JWC, FCC, MRAC. New localities reported: 19 km S Calulo (KWANZA SUL) (147) (P. Schüle pers. comm.). Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola from which only the type specimens were known so far.
Recently (3.XII.2012) more adult specimens were sampled during day near the type locality on a sandy road
through arable fields (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Foveodromica marginepunctata (W. Horn, 1908) (Not. Leyden Mus. 30: 32)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Chiyaka (=Tchiacana?), Kuiva River (BENGUELA) (251), 6 ♂, 4♀, SDEI. —Ganda (BENGUELA) (278) [Horn 1935, sub Dromica (Cosmena) marginepunctata ]. —Ebanga (BENGUELA) (254) [Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956; Ferreira 1965 all sub Dromica (Cosmena)
—Cuchi near Menongue (KUANDO-KUBANGO) (321/344) (Cassola 1980, sub D. marginepunctata ). —Calulo (KWANZA SUL) (128) (Werner 2000a, sub D. marginepunctata ).
Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola discovered by Wellman in 1907. It is quite impossible to locate precisely the capture site between Cuchi and Menongue given by Cassola (1980). Wellman & W. Horn (1908) referred that this species “is even more shade-loving than” F. auropunctata and “occurs in enormous numbers in the bush”, exhibiting the same habits of F. auropunctata also.
Foveodromica soror (W. Horn, 1935) (Stett. Ent. Zeit. 96: 163)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Benguela (BENGUELA) (251), 1♀, SDEI. Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola from which is known so far only the female type
specimen. No ecological data are known for this species.
Foveodromica strandi (W. Horn, 1913) (Arch. Naturgesch. 79 A11: 11)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: South-W Angola, without exact locality (KUANDO-KUBANGO), 1♀, SDEI. —South-W Angola (Ferreira 1965; Werner 2000a both sub D. strandi ).
Remarks. Only the type specimen and another female specimen from Republic Popular of Congo (Shaba, Kawa River) are known so far (Cassola 2002). No ecological data are known for this species also.
Foveodromica wellmani (W. Horn, 1908) (Not. Leyden Mus. 30: 31)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Chiyaka (=Tchiacana?), Kuiva River (BENGUELA) (251), 4 ♂, 5♀, SDEI.
—Bimbi (=Bimbe) (HUAMBO) (210) (Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956; Ferreira 1965 all sub Dromica (Cosmena) wellmani ).
—Benguela (BENGUELA) (251) (Ferreira 1965; Werner 2000a both sub D. wellmani ). New localities reported: 20 km S Caluquembe (HUILA) (317) (P. Schüle pers. comm.). Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola. Wellman & Horn (1908) pointed out that this species
have the same habits like F. auropunctata and F. marginepunctata , “which it so closely resembles that it is
impossible to distinguish them in the field and in company with which it usually occurs” (syntopic species).
Apparently this species presents the same distributional pattern of D. tricostata . The adults near Caluquembe were
sampled during day in open secondary forest (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
