Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Root thin or thick, sometimes subfiliform ( A. sect. Anthriscus and sect. Cerefolium ). Stem hollow, branched, ± striate and pubescent, rarely smooth and glabrous. Basal leaves 2–4-pinnate, triangular in outline, primary segments 4–14, lobes of pinnule ovate or ovate-triangular rarely trilobate, margins serrate or crenate rarely entire. Stem leaves 2–3(–4) pinnate, triangular in outline, primary segments 4–12, lobes of pinnule ovate or ovate-triangular, margins serrate or crenate, rarely entire. Bracts usually absent, rarely 1–2. Bracteoles (1–)5(–7), margins ciliate, rarely membranous, apex acute or acuminate. Peduncules and rays usually glabrous or rarely bristly. Flowers usually bisexual and fertile, in some species the inner flowers sterile, mostly radial symmetry, the ray flowers in some species more or less zygomorphic. Calyx teeth inconspicuous or absent; petals white, occasionally pinkish in bud stage, obovat to cuneate, sometimes the outer ones enlarged, upper ends elongated or inwardly curved. Style 2, short and borne on a conical or cushion-like stylopodium, directed upwards or slightly curved inwards, stylopodium stipitate. Fruit usually ovoid at base, more or less cylindrical, laterally flattened, usually finely tuberculated and covered with bristles, sometimes smooth and glabrous, base of fruit with distinct or obscure crown of bristles or sometimes bristles absent. Carpophore free, split. Mericarps with a ± well-developed ventral groove, beak present; ridges usually absent on the ripened fertile part, present only on the beak; vittae (oil tubes) absent at maturity. Chromosome basenumber x = 7, 8, 9.
