Maranta cyclophylla K. Schumann (1902: 133) View in CoL
Type (lectotype, designated here):— BRAZIL. no date, Burchell 8278 ( K000586896 ; isolectotypes: P00689960 , B [†]). ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ) Protologue citation:—“Brasilien: ohne bestimmten Standort, wahrscheinlich aus Matto Grosso (Burchell n. 8278).”
Notes:— Schumann (1902) cited only the gathering Burchell 8278, without specifying a herbarium. Specimens were found by us at K and P herbaria, as well as a photograph of Macbride’s Collection (Photo Negative no. F 9839) of a specimen once placed at B [†]. We designate the specimen K 000586896 here as the lectotype since it is the most complete specimen.
Maranta divaricata Roscoe (1828 View in CoL : text & tab. 27) ≡ Maranta arundinacea var. divaricata (Roscoe) Hauman (1917: 441) View in CoL
Type (lectotype, designated here):—[illustration] published in Roscoe (1828: tab. 27). ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 )
Protologue citation:—“It was raised from seeds sent from the Brazils by Mr. William Harrison, and first flowered in the Conservatory of Arnold Harrison, Esq. at Aighburgh, near Liverpool, in September 1825; from which plant, apparently a very young one, the present figure was taken.”
= Maranta purpurascens Link ex A. Dietrich (1831: 20) View in CoL ≡ Maranta divaricata var. purpurascens (Link ex A.Dietrich) Körnicke (1862: 36) View in CoL .
Type (lectotype, designated here):—[illustration] published in Roscoe (1828: tab. 28). ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 )
Protologue citation:—“ M. purpurascens Link. Ms. M. divaricata var. Rosc mon. pl. 9. t. 68. Habitat in Brasilia.”
Notes: —In the protologue of M. divaricata no herbarium specimen was mentioned by Roscoe (1828), except a single illustration (tab. 27). Therefore, we indicate it here as lectotype. In the following page, Roscoe (1828) also describes and illustrates “ Maranta divaricata var.”, as therefore being an unnamed variety and not validly published. Later, in the protologue of M. purpurascens, Dietrich (1831) cited only this illustration of the Roscoe (tab. 28), which is designated here as lectotype. The original descriptions and illustrations of M. divaricata and M. purpurascens are identical, except for purple coloration of the leaves. Therefore, they have been considered as synonyms ( Andersson 1986).
