TYPE SPECIES: Dryodromya testacea Rondani, 1856 , by original designation .

CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [ teste Chvála & Wagner (1989: 318) ].

FAMILY: EMPIDIDAE .

REMARKS: There are two original spellings of this genus-group name in Rondani (1856): Dryodromya (page 150) and Driodromya (page 209). Both names are incorrect original spellings because a later emendation is in prevailing usage. The spelling Dryodromia was proposed by Loew (1862a: 31) as an (unjustified) emendation of Dryodromya Rondani (1856: 150) by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “y” to “i” in the same work. Because Dryodromia is in prevailing usage and is attributed to the original author and date (i.e., Rondani 1856), it is deemed a justified emendation under ICZN Code Article 33.2.3.1. Prevailing usage is demonstrated in part by the recent usage of Dryodromia in the following: Stoch (2003), Chvála (2004, 2006), Falk & Crossley (2005), Shamshev & Kustov (2006), Sinclair & Cumming (2006), and Yang et al. (2007). The only usage of the spelling Dryodromya that we are aware of in the last 100 years is that of Chandler (1998).

REMARKS: Dryodromya is an incorrect original spelling because the unjustified emendation Dryodromia (q. v.) by Loew (1862a: 31) is in prevailing usage and therefore is deemed a justified emendation under ICZN Code Article 33.2.3.1.
