Hantzschia nitzschioides Lange-Bertalot, Cavacini, Tagliaventi & Alfinito (2003: 62)

Hantzschia nitzschioides Lange-Bertalot, Cavacini, Tagliaventi & Alfinito (2003: 62) (Figs 58–66)

Valves not distinctly asymmetrical to the apical axis, more or less twisted or sigmoid. Ventral margins straight or slightly convex, dorsal margins straight to slightly convex. Poles taper to obliquely cuneate to subcapitate apices. Length 84.5–97.5 μm, breadth 7.0–8.5 μm. Fibulae, 6–7(8) in 10 μm, almost equidistant, the median two slightly more distant than the others, each of them mostly connected with a single transapical costa. External raphe branches continuous, internal raphe branches not detected in the SEM. Striae parallel throughout, 15–17 in 10 μm. Striae puncta not discernible in LM. In SEM, puncta appear as small, rounded poroids, c. 41–42 in 10 μm, depressed on external valve (Fig. 66).

Distribution and ecology:— Found in sample 071054.

Observations:— This species is uncommon and may be mistaken for a species of Nitzschia rather than be confused with any other known taxon of Hantzschia ( Lange-Bertalot, 2003) , because the valve outline is more similar to those in species of “ Nitzschia ”: valves are almost symmetrical to the apical axis, without “shoulders” on the dorsal margins (see arrow in Fig. 3). The specimens found in Xinjiang also have slight differences in valve features from the type ( Table 6).
