Basionym:— Calathea violacea Lindley (1826: 961) View in CoL .
≡ Phrynium violaceum (Lindley) Roscoe (1828 View in CoL : t. 37)
≡ Zelmira violacea (Lindley) Rafinesque (1838: 50) View in CoL

≡ Calathea allouia var. violacea (Roscoe) Woodson View in CoL in Woodson & Schery (1942: 332) ≡ Goeppertia violacea (Roscoe) Borchsenius & S. Suárez (2012: 630) View in CoL , nom. inval.
Type:— Lectotype, Lindley (1826): t. 962 (ref. sp 961), designated here.
= Phrynium floribundum Lemaire (1852: 189) View in CoL .
Type:— Lectotype, Lemaire (1852): t. 189, designated here.
= Calathea violacea Lindley (1825: 932) View in CoL , nom. nud.
Notes:—Without any diagnosis or illustration, Lindley (1825) initially cited only the name Calathea violacea View in CoL , indicating that he would soon publish this new species. Indeed, Lindley (1826) did effectively publish Calathea violacea View in CoL , providing a detailed description and illustration. Afterwards, Calathea violacea View in CoL has been transferred to different genera ( Roscoe 1828, Rafinesque 1828, Kuntze 1891). Always with the authors explicitly citing the name by Lindley (1826) as basionym. However, Woodson (1942) erroneously indicated Phrynium violaceum (Lindley) Roscoe (1828) View in CoL as basionym for Calathea allouia var. violacea View in CoL . Thus, the basionym proposed by Woodson (1942) is here changed, which does not prevent the valid publication of this combination (Art. 41.3). Borchsenius et al. (2012) also indicated Phrynium violaceum View in CoL as basionym, and cited “ Calathea violacea (Roscoe) Lindl. View in CoL ” as a synonym. However, this combination is nonexistent, and the illustration (Bot. Reg. 11: t. 932. 1825) presented by Borchsenius et al. (2012) cited is Goeppertia flavescens (Lindl.) Borchsenius & S. Suárez (2012: 630) View in CoL . Roscoe (1828) clearly referenced the species of Lindley (1826). Thus, since Lindley (1826) was omitted, the combination of Borchsenius et al. (2012) is invalidated, because a full and direct reference to a valid publication of the basionym was not given (Art. 41.5). Therefore, Goeppertia violacea View in CoL is here validated with a full and direct reference to the correct basionym.
