Type species: Formosatettix arisanensis Tinkham , by original designation.
Redescription
Size small, body robust and short. Head not exserted above upper level of pronotum. Fastigium of vertex in dorsal view surpassing the anterior margin of eyes, much wider than width of one eye from above; anterior margin of fastigium arched or straight, with median carina; frontal ridge in lateral view straight or concave before eyes, protruding anteriorly and arcuate between antennal sockets. In frontal view frontal carinae diverged above lateral ocelli, width of longitudinal furrow of frontal ridge narrower than or equal to or wider than diameter (width) of antennal socket. Antennae filiform, 13- to 15-segmented, antennal bases partly below margin of eyes. Eyes globose.
Pronotum compressed, dorsum tectiform, usually without shoulder angle. In dorsal view, anterior margin of pronotum arcuate protruding or truncate or angular projecting, the apex of pronotum rounded or bilobate, not reaching or reaching or slightly surpassing apex of hind femur. In profile, median carina of pronotum high, arch-like or straight; lower margin of hind process curved or straight, lateral keels of metazona curved or straight. Posterior angles of lateral lobes turned downwards, apex of posterior angles rounded, posterior margins of lateral lobes of pronotum, tegminal (upper) sinus completely absent or vestigial. Tegmina absent. Hind wing absent or very short, lobe-like, covered by pronotum and invisible in lateral view. Upper and lower carinae of fore and mid femora straight or sinuate. Hind femur stout, upper and lower carinae slightly finely serrated; first segment of posterior tarsi longer than the third.
Differential diagnosis
This genus is similar to Formosatettixoides Zheng, 1994 but differs in tegmina absent; hind wing absent or very short, lobe-like, covered by pronotum and invisible in lateral view (tegmina and wings present in Formosatettixoides ). This genus is also closely allied to Macromotettixoides Zheng, Wei and Jiang, 2005 (Metrodorinae) but differs by posterior angles of lateral lobes of pronotum turned downwards, apex of posterior angles rounded (posterior angles of lateral lobes of pronotum produced outwards, obliquely truncate behind in Macromotettixoides ).
