Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the tribe Eupatorieae, which includes all three of the known host plants (combined with Gr. phago, to eat).

Hosts. Asteraceae : Ageratina altissima (L.) R.M. King & H. Rob., Conoclinium coelestinum (L.) DC., Eupatorium serotinum Michx.

Leaf mine. ( Figs. 104–105 View FIGURES 97–108 ) A whitish, upper surface blotch (beginning with a short linear portion that is soon obliterated); frass black, in scattered irregular particles and small lumps.

Puparium. ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12–21 ) Brown; formed outside the mine.

Distribution. USA: MA, OK, TN; Canada: ON.

Adult description. Wing length 2.1–2.7mm (♂), 2.3–2.9mm (♀). Length of ultimate section of vein CuA1 divided by penultimate section: 2.2–2.6. Eye height divided by gena height: 6.1–9.4. First flagellomere rounded. Arista pubescent. Notum subshining.

Chaetotaxy: Two ori, two ors; slightly decreasing in length anteriorly. Ocellar and postvertical setae subequal to ors. Three dorsocentral setae, posterior two strong, anterior seta more closely set to second seta and approximately 2/5 its length. Acrostichal setae in six rows, inset from dorsocentral rows. Mid tibia with two posterolateral setae.

Coloration: ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 12–21 ) Setae dark brown. Head mostly light yellow; antenna, back of head, clypeus, palpus, margin of vertex, small rounded triangular spot surrounding tubercle and posterolateral corner of frons to base of inner vertical seta dark brown to black; posterolateral spot on frons extending as line anteriorly, fading to yellow at base of posterior ors. Thorax black with complete lateral yellow stripe laterally on scutum and postpronotum (excluding dark anterior spot), and anepisternum with light yellow dorsal stripe in posterior corner that is very narrow anteriorly and ¼ height of sclerite posteriorly. Calypter margin pale, hairs dark brown. Haltere white. Legs black with apex of fore femur light yellow with spot as long as wide, or nearly as long, and base of fore tibia yellowish. Abdomen dark brown to black.

Genitalia: ( Figs. 268–272 View FIGURES 268–272 ) External genitalia of Calycomyza type, with surstylus somewhat flattened anteroposteriorly, tubercle-like setae largely directed posteriorly. Phallophorus with short ventral surface. Basiphallus composed of two narrow triangular plates fused to base of hypophallus. Hypophallus broad and U-shaped, relatively narrow and well-sclerotized; with basally pigmented anteromedial flagellum. Paraphallus longer than basiphallus, with dark narrow base and pale, broad, flat, doubly pointed apex; medially fused to ventrobasal plate of mesophallus. Mesophallus dark, cylindrical, length approximately twice width with base tapered and middle constricted; with flat, bifurcated ventrobasal plate with narrow basal stem; small, dark ovate sclerite present between mesophallus and distiphallus. Distiphallus slightly twisted and asymmetrical, as long as mesophallus but slightly thicker, very dark; with internal haired ridges enclosed by marginally thickened lobes produced along ventral suture. Ejaculatory apodeme with broad, stout stem before relatively short, pale blade; sperm pump pigmented around base of duct.
