Hosts. Fagaceae : Castanea mollissima Blume , Quercus * alba L., Q. * ilicifolia Wangenh. , Q. rubra L., Q. * stellata Wangenh., Q. * velutina Lam. ( Spencer & Steyskal 1986) ; we have also seen mines on Q. laevis Walter , Q. macrocarpa Michx. , and Q. margaretta (Ashe) Small.

Leaf mine. ( Figs. 81–82 ) A brownish blotch, or sometimes irregularly linear, with frass in irregular lumps. Because mines are formed in leaves that are still expanding, the oviposition site and associated feeding punctures often open into conspicuous holes, and the mined portion of the leaf is disfigured. The mines on Quercus alba had distinct primary and secondary feeding lines ( Fig. 81 ).

Puparium. Brown; formed outside the mine.

Distribution. USA: GA, IN, KS, MA, ME, NC, *OK, PA, SC, TN, VA; Canada: NS, ON; Puerto Rico. We have also seen photographed leaf mines from IL and NJ. Spencer & Stegmaier (1973) state that it is “virtually certain” that the Puerto Rican specimens mentioned in the original description represent another species, but the basis for this assertion is unclear.
