Figs. 1–7 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 View FIGURE 3 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURE 5 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7
Emmenomma oculatum Simon, 1884: 126 View in CoL , pl. 3, figs. 8–11 (lectotype male, designated by Roth 1967: 318, paralectotypes 10♀, 3♂, 2imm, from Hoste and Hermite Islands, Orange Bay, Tierra del Fuego, deposited in MNHN 6687, examined); Simon, 1887: E19, pl. 2, fig. 8; Simon, 1898a: 247, figs. 231–232; Tullgren, 1901: 251, pl. 19, fig. 8; Roth, 1967: 317, pl. 51, figs. 12–13; Lehtinen, 1967: 443, figs. 179–180; Schiapelli & Gerschman, 1974: 88, figs. 39–42; Griswold et al., 2005: 9, fig. 183D; World Spider Catalog, 2014.
Emmenomma falklandicum Hogg, 1913: 45 View in CoL , pl. 1, fig. 2 (holotype female, from Falkland Islands ( Malvinas), deposited in BMNH 1924.III.1.948, examined); Roth, 1967: 317 (Syn.); World Spider Catalog, 2014.
Emmenomma beauchenicum Usher, 1983: 557 View in CoL , pl. 1, fig. 3 (holotype female, from Falkland Islands ( Malvinas), deposited in BMNH 1982.9.16.35, examined). Syn. nov.
Synonymy. Study of the type series of Emmenomma oculatum Simon, 1884 View in CoL revealed that the few differences found in E. beauchenicum View in CoL (lack of one spine on the retrolateral face of the metatarsus I, smaller size of the PME and PLE, darker coloration and larger size) and differences in the shape of the epigynum of E. oculatum View in CoL and E. beauchenicum View in CoL are only intra-specific variation and do not justify specific recognition. We conclude that Emmenomma beauchenicum View in CoL from the Falkland Islands is a junior synonym of E. oculatum View in CoL .
Notes. Since the specimens of Emmenomma oculatum used for the redescription are non-types deposited at the AMNH, in the “Additional material examined” section, they are tagged with an asterisk (*). The type series of Emmenomma oculatum was examined and they only contained a label by V. Roth designating the lectotype and paralectotypes. There was also another vial identified as “Mission du Cape Horn” from where the specimens were probably removed. This vial contains several specimens from all over the Orange bay and provided information on the intraspecific variation of E. oculatum .
Diagnosis. Females of Emmenomma oculatum differ from E. obscurum new rank and E. joshuabelli sp. nov. by the epigynum middle-field with two sclerotized plates ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 A–B; 6D); males of E. oculatum differ from E. joshuabelli sp. nov. by the sharp pointed TA in E. oculatum ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 A–D; 6B–C) rather than round TA in E. joshuabelli sp. nov. ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 C).
