Neolitsea staubii (Pimenova) Doweld , comb. nov.

Cinnamomum staubii Pimenova (1937: 25 , pl. 8, fig. 5) (‘ Staubi ’).

Holotype:— UKRAINE. Mohyl’ne village, Korosten’, Zhytomyr region, Pimenova coll. ( National Museum of Natural History 751/40, Kyiv, Ukraine).

IFPNI: 04F30B3E-41A2-4302-98B6-3400F8CBC66B.

Note:—Imchanitzkaja (1975: 42) considered Cinnamomum staubii Pimenova as Neolitsea sp. , noticing a resemblance in leaf venation between fossils and extant forms. However, due to fragmentary preservation of the single leaf imprint, she abstained from validating the necessary combination. Additional fossil plant materials from the Eocene sediments of Ukraine, contributed by F. Stanislawski in his unpublished dissertation Palaeogene flora of Voljanshchina village (1950, in Russian), confirm the placement of C. staubii Pimenova in Neolitsea .

Cinnamomoides Seward (1925: 253 , 254)

Type:— C. newberryi (Berry) Seward ( Cinnamomum newberryi Berry 1911: 423 ).

Fossil-species of Cinnamomum or Cinnamomophyllum , described from the older Cretaceous (not Tertiary) sediments ( Barthoux & Fritel 1925; Teixeira 1944, 1945a, b, 1950; Bender & Mädler 1969), should not be recognized as Cinnamomum related species since they lack cuticular details to corroborate their suggested affiliation with Cinnamomum . The fossil-genus (morphogenus) Cinnamomoides Seward was established especially for such cinnamomoid fossil foliage of Cretaceous age, lacking cuticular characteristics and having just a superficial resemblance with the foliage of the extant genus. Cretaceous fossil-species of Cinnamomum and Cinnamomophyllum , based on fossil leaves, are formally recombined below in Cinnamomoides :
