Type material
Holotype Bahia: 1 ♂ ( MZUSP 35004 View Materials ), Ilhéus, Campus do Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau ( CEPEC-CEPLAC), - 14.757777°S, - 39.237777°W, II/2009, leg. W. da Rocha, in bromeliads and canopy of Erythrina fusca GoogleMaps . Paratypes 3 ♂♂, 6 ♀♀ ( MZUSP 35005), 6 ♂♂, 6 ♀♀ ( MNRJ 27681), 3 ♂♂, 2 ♀♀ ( MZUF 9662), 1 ♂, 2 ♀♀ ( MZUF 9663), same data as holotype.
Description
Maximum body length: ♂ 13 mm, ♀ 14 mm (ovigerous). Habitus in lateral view as in Figure 6 View Figure 6 (a). Colour dark brown; cephalon with small and irregular unpigmented spots; antenna with articles 1 – 3, half distal portion of fifth article of peduncle and flagellum unpigmented; pereonites 1 – 7 with unpigmented spots on median and paramedian areas, epimera completely unpigmented; pleon strongly pigmented, pleonites 3 – 5 epimera sometimes unpigmented, uropod protopod unpigmented. Dorsum with verruca-like scales and covered with fan-shaped scale-setae ( Figures 6 View Figure 6 (b), 9(b)). Cephalon ( Figures 6 View Figure 6 (c – e), 9(a)) lateral lobes bent upwards; eyes consisting of 20 – 22 ommatidia. Noduli laterales very short inserted as in Figures 6 View Figure 6 (a), 9(b). Pereonite 1 with deep dorsolateral furrow, cuticle-scaled ( Figures 6 View Figure 6 (e), 9(b)); pereonites 1 – 3 with ventral lobes slightly developed ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (f)). Pleon ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (g – i)) with neopleura 5 not surpassing distal margin of telson; telson with wide dorsal depression, proximal portion almost three times as wide as distal portion, lateral sides concave near proximal margin. Antennula ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 (j)) with proximal and distal articles subequal in length, distal article with 10 aesthetascs distributed in five lateral sets plus apical pair. Antenna ( Figures 6 View Figure 6 (k), 9(c)) with distal article of peduncle about twice as long as flagellum; second article of flagellum twice as long as distal article, distal article bearing two lateral sets of aesthetascs. Mandible with molar penicil of about 10 branches, left mandible ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (a)) with 2 + 1 penicils, right mandible ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (b)) with 1 + 1 penicils. Maxillula ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (c)) inner endite bearing two hairy penicils, distal margin with slight lateral tip; outer endite of 4 + 6 teeth, inner set with five cleft teeth at apex. Maxilla ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (d)) inner lobe rounded covered with thick setae, outer lobe slightly rounded, twice as wide as inner lobe covered with thin setae. Maxilliped ( Figure 7 View Figure 7 (e)) palp with two distinct setae on proximal article; endite subrectangular densely covered with thin setae on distal margin, median seta stout surpassing distal margin, distal outer and inner margins with one short seta each. Pereopods 1 – 7 stout, carpus 1 with distal seta serrate at apex; dactylus of two claws, inner claw reaching distal margin of outer claw; ungual seta not surpassing distal margin of outer claw, dactylar seta stout surpassing outer claw. Uropod ( Figure 8 View Figure 8 (a)) endopod about twice as long as exopod, exopod grooved on outer margin. Respiratory structures ( Figures 8 View Figure 8 (e-h), 9(d)) as in diagnosis.
Male: Pereopods 1 – 7 ( Figure 8 View Figure 8 (b, c)) merus and carpus with dense brush of setae on sternal margin. Genital papilla as in Figure 8 View Figure 8 (d). Pleopod 1 – 5 exopods bearing many setae along inner and outer margins. Pleopod 1 ( Figure 8 View Figure 8 (e)) exopod triangular, inner margin slightly rounded, outer margin concave; endopod about twice as long as exopod, inner distal portion bearing many setae along inner margin, distal portion rounded with three to five distinct setae. Pleopod 2 ( Figure 8 View Figure 8 (f)) exopod triangular, outer margin concave; endopod rather slender and slightly longer than exopod. Pleopod 3 and 4 exopods as in Figure 8 View Figure 8 (g) and (h), respectively. Pleopod 5 exopod ( Figure 8 View Figure 8 (i)) rhomboid, inner margin slightly rounded and distal margin straight.
Etymology
The new species is named after the native people of Pataxós hã hã hães, who inhabit the southeast region of the state of Bahia.
Remarks
The polyspiracular pleopodal lungs shows a tendency to reduce the number of openings gradually from exopod 1 to 5 (see Ferrara et al. 1990; Paoli et al. 2002). Oxossioniscus pataxo sp. nov. shows the most interesting characteristic of the new genus, the lack of respiratory structures on pleopod 5 exopods. This character state was never described within Oniscidea, and may constitute a new evolutionary stage of these structures.
