FIG. 69. Shell morphology and anatomy of species of Philine Ascanius, 1772 . A, Philine sp. 1 , (2.5 mm), ventral view, Norfolk Ridge, SMIB 8 stn DW 146-147; B, same specimen, radula, scale bar = 50 Μm. C, Philine sp. 2 , (7 mm), ventral view, Tonga, BORDAU 2 stn DW 1617; D, same specimen, gizzard plate, scale bar = 200 Μm; E, same specimen, radula, scale bar = 100 Μm. F, Philine sp.3 , (2 mm), ventral view, New Caledonia, BATHUS 1 stn DW 654.
DISTRIBUTION. — Collected from New Caledonia (Fig. 68), in 298-601 m, live in 508-532 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell morphology. Length 2.5 mm, width 2 mm (largest specimen examined). Shell fragile, oval to rounded, with convex sides (Fig. 69A). Only 1 whorl visible, forming the entire shell. Anterior end of the shell rounded. Umbilicus closed. Aperture as long as the shell, wide anteriorly, narrowing abruptly at about 4/5 of its length. Apex rounded, depressed, with a portion of the protoconch visible. Aperture lip conspicuously rising from the left side, forming a short wing posteriorly that rises over the apex. Columellar margin slightly thickened near the anterior end. Sculpture of a number of punctuated spiral grooves. The punctuations are small, elongate, and partially fused to the next one within each groove. The grooves are separated by gaps much wider than the grooves themselves. Colour uniformly dirty white.
Anatomy. The gizzard plates have not been examined. The radular formula is 11 x 2.1.0.1. 2 in a specimen from New Caledonia (SMIB 8 stn DW 146-147). The inner lateral teeth are triangular, with a wide base and a short, strong, curved cusp (Fig. 69B). The cusp bears several strong denticles on its inner side. The outer lateral teeth are hookshaped and simple, lacking denticles.
REMARKS. — This species remains undescribed until descriptions of the external morphology of the body become available. Philine sp. 1 is clearly different from other species reviewed herein in having a globose shell. The radula is very similar to that of other species of the genus Philine , so this species is referred to this genus.
