COMMENTS: See comments under S. arizonae , S. inopinatus , S. mascotensis , and S. peruanus , forms formerly ranked as subspecies of S. hispidus . The homogeneity of speciesgroup taxa assembled here must be viewed skeptically. The synonymy of still other forms with S. mascotensis is likely. See Cameron and Spencer (1981, Mammalian Species, 158).
