Rhyacophila brevicephala Iwata 1927 , new to Yakushima

Rhyacophila brevicephala Iwata 1927 , 217, pls. 5–6, larva, Japan (Honshu); Schmid 1970, 55, 123, pl. 22, male; Hattori 2005, 420, 429, 436, male, female, larva, habitat.

Specimens examined. Yakushima Island: 3 males, Miyanoura-gawa, Yukawa-bashi, 9.v.2006, TI , L (SPMN- IS); 1 male, Miyanoura-gawa, a tributary, 15.x.2007, TI , S (SPMN-IS); 2 males, Shiratani-gawa, Shiratani-bashi, 14.vi.2007, TI , L (SPMN-IS).

Remarks. This species belongs to the R. brevicephala Species Group. Adults of this species were collected beside streams with stony bottoms at 20 to 80 m a.s.l., but never from high elevation sites ( Fig. 6E ).

Distribution. Japan (Yakushima, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Okino-shima, Goto-retto), Kuriles. New to Yakushima.

Japanese name. Hiroatama-nagare-tobikera.
