TYPE LOCALITY: Canada, Saskatchewan, North Saskatchewan River, Carlton House near Fort Carlton .
DISTRIBUTION: S. British Columbia and C. Alberta to S.W. Manitoba ( Canada), south to C. and W. South Dakota, N. New Mexico, N. Arizona, C. and W. Nevada, and E.C. California ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: Formerly included idahoensis and clusius; see Thaeler, 1972, J. Mammal., 53:417-428, and Thaeler and Hinesley, 1979, J. Mammal., 60:480-488. Revised by Bailey, 1915, N. Am. Fauna, 39:1 -136, Thaeler, 1968, Chromosoma, 25: 172-183, and Thaeler, 1974, J. Mammal., 55:885-889.
