(Fig. 2)
Etymology. The specific name refers to the type-locality.
Description. Integument dark-brown covered with yellow pubescence, interspersed with white.
Head. Covered with yellow pubescence, sparsely intermixed with white; vertex with two, longitudinal, brownish pubescent bands. Frons wider than long, sparsely punctate at sides. Upper eye lobes with five rows of ommatidia; distance between upper eye lobes equal to 5.0 times width of one lobe. Distance between lower eye equal to 1.8 times distance between upper eye lobes; length of lower eye lobe equal to 1.3 time length of genae. Antennal tubercles, prominent, acute. Antennae reaching elytral apex approximately at apex of antennomere VIII. Scape and pedicel dark-brown; antennomeres III–XI reddish; distal antennomeres annulated with apical brown ring.
Thorax. Pronotum covered with yellow and sparsely intermixed whitish pubescence; on center forming three longitudinal, narrow bands: middle one yellow; lateral ones irregular, brownish. Sides of prothorax with sparse, coarse, contrasting punctures; anterior half, with two oblique bands of whitish pubescence bordered with brownish pubescence. Thoracic sternites covered by yellow and intermixed white pubescence; center of meso- and metasternum with predominantly white pubescence; mesepimera, metepimera, and base of metepisterna with brown pubescence. Scutellum covered with brown pubescence, with narrow, central, yellowish band.
Elytra. Integument predominantly covered with yellow pubescence. With white pubescence as follows: two longitudinal, short, irregular bands at basal third closer to margins than suture; central third of lateral declivity enlarged at center; bands and small spots on posterior half; and dark-brown pubescence as follows: narrow, longitudinal, sutural band at basal fourth; small spot near humeri at lateral declivity. Elytral apices rounded.
Legs. Covered with yellow and intermixed white pubescence; base of femora with predominantly white pubescence.
Abdomen. Urosternites with yellow pubescence intermixed with white pubescence, sparser on center. Lateral margins of urosternites IV–V with dense, yellow pubescence.
Dimensions in mm (male). Total length, 9.9; length of prothorax at center, 2.0; widest width of prothorax, 2.5; humeral width, 3.7; elytral length, 7.1.
Type material. Holotype male from BOLIVIA, Santa Cruz: Andrés Ibáñez (Lomas de Arena ), 30.XI.2010, Ivan Garcia B. & Mirtha Saldias N. col. ( MNKM).
Remarks. Glypthaga arena sp. nov. is similar to G. paupercula ( Thomson, 1868) by the dark-brown sutural band on basal third of elytra. It differs by the prominent, acute antennal tubercles and presence of small brown spot on lateral declivity of elytra near humeri. In G. paupercula , the antennal tubercles are rounded, and the lateral declivity of elytra is enlarged and covered in brown pubescence from humeri to apex. Two other species of Glypthaga also have dark-brown sutural bands. These four species can be separated by the following key:
1. Elytra with brown sutural band on basal third.............................................................. 2
- Elytra with brown sutural band from base to apical third or even to apex......................................... 3
2(1). Elytra with whitish pubescence macula on lateral declivity near middle.................. G. paupercula ( Thomson, 1868) View in CoL
- Elytra with whitish pubescence band and small spots on apical half................................. G. arena View in CoL sp. nov.
3(1). Wide sutural band from base to apical third, brownish with small yellow spots................ G. lignosa Thomson, 1868 View in CoL
- Narrow sutural band from base to apex, brownish but without small yellow spots......... G. vicina Martins & Galileo, 1990 View in CoL
