The Rhinelepini represents a group of three genera: Pogonopoma View in CoL , Pseudorinelepis View in CoL , and Rhinelepis View in CoL . It is one of the best-diagnosed groups in the Loricariidae View in CoL and is supported by such unique characteristics as a lateral shelf on the upper pharyngeal tooth plate and a large, U-shaped diverticulum of the oesophagus ( Armbruster, 1998c). Its position as sister to the remainder of the Hypostominae ( Fig. 37 View Figure 37 ) is identical in this study to Schaefer (1986).
