Levidorum pettibonae Perkins, 1987 View in CoL (Fig. 38A–D)
Levidorum pettibonae Perkins, 1987: 166 View in CoL –168, fig. 3A–F.
Material examined. USA: holotype, USNM 97435, Gulf of México, Florida shelf, 65 miles west of Egmont Key, 27°37'N 83°58W, 55 m, 21 Nov 1967; 1 paratype, USNM 97437, Gulf of México, Florida shelf, 70 miles west of Sanibel Island, 26°24'N 83°22W, 55 m, 7 Dec 1966.
Diagnosis. Levidorum with simple club shaped chaetae with 3–5 fine distal teeth.
Description. Holotype complete, length 6.5 mm for 45 chaetigers, width 0.3 mm. Paratype reproductive stolon, length 2.7 mm for 31 chaetigers, width 0.3 mm. Preserved material yellowish, without colour markings, eyes reddish brown. Body distorted anteriorly (Fig. 38A, B). Ciliation not observed.
Four eyes, with lenses, laterally positioned on dorsal and ventral side, ventral pair larger (Fig. 38B). Eyes separated, eye spots absent. Palps absent. Nuchal epaulettes absent. Antennae and dorsal cirri absent (Fig. 38A, B).
Parapodial lobes rounded, minute. Anterior chaetigers with 2 aciculae, 1 in median and posterior. Chaetal fascicle with 5–6 chaetae in anterior chaetigers, 2–4 in median and posterior. All chaetae simple, expanded distally, with 3–5 fine distal teeth (Fig. 38C). Bayonet chaetae absent.
Pharynx with 1 sinuation anterior and lateral to proventricle. Trepan in chaetiger 1 with 5 equal teeth in 1 ring. Basal ring present; infradental spines absent (Fig. 38D). Proventricle equal in length to 2–3 segments in chaetiger 4–6 with 25–30 (difficult to assess) rows of muscle cells. Pygidium without anal cirri (lost?).
Reproduction and morphology of epitokous stages. Anterior scissiparity behind chaetiger 14 as judged from Perkins (1987: fig. 3). The stolon has chaetae as the holotype. It is possibly immature, without swimming chaetae or appendages. One pair of eyes with lenses present.
Habitat. 55 m.
Distribution. North West Atlantic, Gulf of México. Only known from type locality.
Remarks. Levidorum pettibonae may be separated from other Levidorum on its club shaped simple chaetae with 3–5 fine distal teeth.
