Genus Nymphon J.C. Fabricius, 1794 View in CoL
Gender
Neuter.
Type species
Pycnogonum grossipes O. Fabricius, 1780 .
Remarks
In establishing the genus Nymphon, J.C. Fabricius (1794) included two species ( Pycnogonum grossipes O. Fabricius, 1780 and Nymphon hirtum J.C. Fabricius, 1794 ), without designating a type species. Of these two nominal species eligible to be the type species, N. hirtum was later designated as the type for Chaetonymphon Sars, 1888 . This action, however, does not constitute fixation of P. grossipes as the type species of Nymphon , because Article 69.4 of the Code excludes “fixation by elimination” ( ICZN 1999). As far as we are aware, no type was fixed for Nymphon before Child’s designation of “ Nymphon grossipes (O. Fabricius, 1780) ” ( Child 1998: 35), although this was not in accordance with Recommendation 67B of the Code ( ICZN 1999), which states that “the name of a type species should be cited by its original binomen”.
