view. Reddish antenna with 12 antenommeres; an antennal organ in the 4 th flagellomere from the apex to the base. Eyes less protruding than in the male, ellipsoidal. Frons convex with a distinct sub-circular yellow plate centrally, similar to male. Central carinae of the face continuous with the lateral margins of fastigium, well marked only above the sub-circular yellow plate. Thorax. Pronotum ( Figs. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 ). Strongly sellate in lateral view; central carina of pronotal disk distinct, except in the anterior extremity; medio-posterior region of pronotal disk and posterior region of lateral lobes distinctly rugose; lateral lobes of pronotum with two distinct sulci, one medial and one posterior. Thoracic tergites and sternites light brown. Wings ( Figs. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 ). Brachypterous; tegmina reaching the 7 th abdominal tergite. Tegmina dark brown with distinct and lighter venation, apex rounded. C reaching ¼ proximal. Sc reaching little beyond the median region. Costal area sub-equal to the subcostal area in width. R bifurcated a little before the median region in R1 and Rs; Rs bifurcated in the ¼ distal in Rs1 and Rs2; all sub-branches of R reaching the apex. M bifurcated in the median region in Ma and Mp; Ma bifurcated in Ma1 and Ma 2 in the ¼ distal, on the same line as the bifurcation of Rs; all sub-branches of M reaching the apex. Cu1 slightly arched forward, not reaching the apex. Cu2 rectilinear, reaching a little beyond the median region. A1 rectilinear, reaching the anal margin (A3) in the ¼ distal. A2 short, rectilinear in the ¼ proximal and after that in zig-zag until the median region. Hind wings translucent, yellow. Legs ( Figs. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 ). Fore- and mid-legs with brown femora and reddish tibiae and tarsi. Ventral face of foretibiae with 13-13 (right/left) outer spines and 14-14 inner spines. Most proximal segment of foretarsi about 2.5x longer than the next most distal segment. Ventral face of midtibiae with 13-14 outer spines and 15-13 inner spines. Most proximal segment of midtarsi about 2.0x longer than the next most distal segment. Hind femur light brown and little reddish on dorsal face. Hind tibiae and tarsi reddish, with 32-30 outer spines and 29-29 inner spines. Most proximal segment of the hind tarsi with a dorsal spine in the outer margin; about 3.0x longer than the next most distal segment. Tarsal claws unequal in length and with internal serration. Abdomen ( Figs. 5A, B and D View FIGURE 5 ). Epiproct linguiform with apex almost acute, in dorsal view with two folds, one longitudinal and one transversal (forming a sulcus similar to ‘+’ symbol), and lateral portions slightly curved downward. Paraprocts with same length of the epiproct. Cerci tapered and with apex slightly curved outwards; reaching the ¼ distal of epiproct. Abdominal sternites light brown, except the subgenital plate a little darker. Ventro-lateral portions of the 8 th abdominal tergite covering about ¾ of the latero-anterior portions of subgenital plate. Posterior portion of subgenital plate exceeding the length of the 8 th abdominal tergite; posterior margin rounded laterally, converging with slightly anterior curvature to a medial small triangular protrusion directed backwards; spines absent. Ovipositor ( Figs. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 ). Light brown. Outer margins of dorsal valves with 14 distinct teeth, including the apical; outer margins of ventral valves with 8 distinct teeth, including the apical.

Distribution. BRAZIL, State of Amazonas; COLOMBIA: Amazonas Department; ECUADOR: Morona Santiago Province; PERU: Loreto Department ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ).

Remarks. Taxonomy: Pseudomastax personata was described based on a male specimen from Peru, as a more precise locality was not available. In 1970, Descamps performed a revision of Pseudomastax , redescribed the male, and presented a description of a ‘presumptive’ female of this species. However, the female specimen used for this purpose was unique, and no male has been recorded from the same locality (La Honda, Colombia). After studying the descriptions and also many specimens housed in MNRJ and INPA, I concluded that the female described herein may be the correct association between both sexes, as opposed to that presented by Descamps (op. cit). This conclusion is based on evidence suggesting that the collection of MNRJ contains several specimens, both males and females, from the same locality (Benjamin Constant, state of Amazonas, Brazil) and that both sexes have a well-marked central sub-circular yellow plate on the face (see Figs. 5C and G View FIGURE 5 ). This mark is considered a diagnostic character for male and isn’t present in the female specimen studied by Descamps (1970). Among all species of Pseudomastax , P. personata uniquely presents this character. Therefore, all seven female specimens studied herein have been identified as belonging to this species.

Morphology: The measurements of the specimen used for description are shown in Table 2 and photos of a male specimen are shown in Figures 5 View FIGURE 5 E–G.
