Note:— Pinguicula lilacina View in CoL was described by Schlechtendal & Chamisso (1830: 94) from material gathered by C.J.W. Schiede and F. Deppe in Mexico between 1829 and 1830 and sent to Berlin (B). In the protologue, the authors have not referred to any particular Schiede’s specimen or a locality for the species and we could not trace any original material at B that could be linked to Schlechtendal and Chamisso’s name. It is well known that thousands of type specimens were destroyed at B during the World War II ( Hiepko 1987); nevertheless, Schiede’s private collection, currently housed at the Martin-Luther-Universität Herbarium (HAL), contains several duplicates of Schiede’s specimens held at B. We cannot be sure whether the type material of P. lilacina View in CoL was transferred to HAL or destroyed during the bombing raid at Berlin in 1943. In HAL collection, we have traced the specimen cited by Casper (1966) as “ holotype ”. This sheet is stamped “Type” and bears two handwritten labels, one by Schiede stating “444 Pinguicula sp. fl. lilacinis, in umbrosis pr[ope] Jalapan, Oct. 28”, and the other by Chamisso stating “113 Mexico, Schiede, Pinguicula lilacina View in CoL n. sp. ”. A second sheet of Schiede and Deppe cited by Casper as housed at LE could not be found in our searches; nevertheless, another Schiede’s sheet traced at BM (identified as “ isotype ” by S. Zamudio in 1996) have two Schiede labels. One of these labels with the same date and similar information of that on HAL: “ Pinguicula sp. pr.[ope] Jalapan, Oct. 28”; therefore, it should be considered as part of the same gathering and, according to Art. 9.3(c) of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012), it is an original material aswell. Based on these facts, we correct Casper’s holotype citation to lectotype and the specimen at BM is cited as isolectotype according to Rec. 9C of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012).
