Subgenus Schizonycteris Porter, Hoofer, Cline, Hoffman, & Baker, 2007 View in CoL
Type species
Schizostoma minutum Gervais, 1856 .
Type locality
Brazil, Bahia, Capela Nova.
Included species
Micronycteris (S.) minuta ( Porter et al., 2007) , M. (S.) sanborni ( Porter et al., 2007; Siles et al., 2013), M. (S.) yatesi ( Siles et al., 2013) , M. (S.) simmonsae sp. nov., and M. (S.) tresamici sp. nov. (Table 1).
Emended diagnosis
Overall size is small (weight 5–9.3 g; forearm 31.8–37 mm).Pinnae connected by a moderate to high interauricular membrane with moderate to deep midline notch, dividing the membrane into two triangular flaps. Ventral fur is paler than dorsal fur (gray, buff, or white). Second and first phalanxes of wing digit IV are subequal. Relationship between mastoid and ZBs is variable (Appendix 1). Cranium is not tall in lateral view, 25° or less in relation to the rostrum. Lower incisors brachydont. In lateral view, P4 can be taller or equal than P 3 in size; and p2 is the largest lower premolar (similar height and width),followed by p4 (length> width), and p3 is the smallest (p2> p4>p3). Coronoid process is low, and the upper margin of the ascending process has a shallow slope (<18°). Emended diagnosis based on Simmons and Voss (1998) and Porter et al. (2007). Karyotype is identical in M. minuta ( Baker,1979) , M. minuta NSA , M. sanborni ( Simmons,1996) , M. simmonsae sp. nov. and M. tresamici sp. nov.: 2n = 28 and FN = 50 (Figure 4).
Comments
Micronycteris homezorum (type locality Zulia, Venezuela) and M. hypoleuca (type locality Santa Marta, Colombia) are regarded as synonyms of M. (S.) minuta ( Ochoa & Sánchez, 2005; Porter et al., 2007; this study) and probably belong to the M. minuta clade distributed in northern South America. If more data confirm this clade as a distinct species from M. (S.) minuta (type locality Bahia, Brazil), then M. hypoleuca Allen 1900 would be the valid name and M. homezorum Pirlot, 1967 its junior synonym. Porter et al. (2007) included M.schmidtorum in this subgenus but we reassigned it to Leuconycteris . Schizonycteris is sister to the clade formed by the other three subgenera ( Xenoctenes , Leuconycteris , and Micronycteris ).
