Taxonomy. Original description: Cyprinus rohita Hamilton, 1822: 301 View in CoL , 388, pl. 36, fig. 85 [Gangetic provinces and Ava, India; no types preserved; lectotype as the figured specimen in pl. 36 designated by Fricke (1999: 83)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Hamilton (1822: pl. 36, fig. 85) as Cyprinus rohita View in CoL .
Status in Afghanistan. Reported from aquaculture facilities in Afghanistan ( Currie 2006; Coad 2014).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kept in aquaculture facilities, but not recorded in the wild.—General distribution: South Asia: Ganges River basin, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar; introduced elsewhere.—Habitat: It is the natural inhabitant of freshwater sections of the rivers, is a bottom feeder, and prefers to feed on plant matter, including decaying vegetation. The spawning season of rohu generally coincides with the southwest monsoon. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Commercially important.
Reasons of introduction. Fisheries: enhancement of wild stocks and sports fishing.
Conservation. Not relevant (introduced species).
