Taxonomy. Original description: Schizothorax intermedius McClelland & Griffith in McClelland 1842: 579, pl. 12, fig. 1 [Cabul River at Jullalabad and Tarnuck River, Afghanistan; syntypes: (3) whereabouts unknown].— Afghanistan synonyms: Racoma intermedia ( McClelland, 1842) ; Schizothorax schumacheri Fowler & Steinitz, 1956 .—Revisions: Berg (1949: 712).—Illustration: Berg (1949: 713, fig. 465).

Status in Afghanistan. First identified from Afghanistan by McClelland and Griffith (1842) as Schizothorax schumacheri ; confirmed by Coad (1981: 12; 2014: 216; 2015: 228).—Afghanistan materials: BMNH, CMN, USNM.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River and Tarnuck River.—General distribution: West and central Asia: Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.—Habitat: This species inhabits a wide range of rivers and occasionally lakes, but it is usually found in flowing waters. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Karilov & Mamilov 2020a).—Threats: CON, FIT, ABS, COM, EUT.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.— Decline status: Stable.—Low priority for conservation action.
