Taxonomy. Original description: Pimelodus tengara Hamilton, 1822: 183 , 377, pl. 3, fig. 61 [Ponds of India; possible syntypes: BMNH 1858.8.15.94-96 (3)].— Afghanistan synonyms: Pimelodus anisurus McClelland, 1842 .—Revisions: Jayaram (2006: 54).—Illustration: Hamilton (1822: pl. 3, fig. 61) as Pimelodus tengara .

Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842: 583) as Pimelodus anisurus ; confirmed by Günther (1864: 190), Coad (1981: 15; 2014: 297; 2015: 229).—Afghanistan materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: South Asia: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh,? Thailand and? Java ( Indonesia).—Habitat: This species inhabits flowing and standing waters. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC ( Ng 2010a).—Threats: This is a fairly widespread species and there are no major threats.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Keystone species.— Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
