Acizzia Heslop-Harrison View in CoL View at ENA
( Figs 26 View FIGURES 10 – 27 , 54 View FIGURES 47 – 58 , 75, 76 View FIGURES 71 – 76. 71 , 82 View FIGURES 81 – 83 )
Diagnosis: Genal processes shorter than vertex, rounded or conical ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 10 – 27 ). Forewing oblong-oval; with or without pattern; costal break present; tapered pterostigma; cell cu1 high, leaning towards the base of wing ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 47 – 58 ). Metabasitarsus with 1 or 2 apical spurs. Male proctiger with a conspicuous posterior lobe which may or may not bear a secondary finger-like appendage.
Biology and damage: Attacks are mainly on young parts, causing chlorosis and necrosis and promoting the development of sooty mould due to the secretion of honeydew ( Burckhardt 1993). Immatures produce wax threads and tend to accumulate on axils of leaves, inflorescences and just below the flower buds ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 71 – 76. 71 ). When the population is high, they can also be found along the leaves ( Fig. 76 View FIGURES 71 – 76. 71 ) (field observation).
Host-plants: Predominantly on Acacia and Albizzia (Fabaceae) but also on other plant families such as Capparidaceae , Loranthaceae , Proteaceae , Sapindaceae and Solanaceae ( Taylor & Kent 2013) .
Distribution: Old World. Some Australian species such as Acizzia uncatoides were introduced into other continents ( Ouvrard 2017).— Colombia: Acizzia uncatoides (Hodkinson 1988) .
Remarks: This is the first record of Acizzia acaciaebaileyanae in South America.
