Diagnosis (modified from Korneyev, 1999). All setae uniformly yellow to brown; setulae creamy white to golden yellow; frontal vitta fine yellowish setulose (bare in some Nearctic Neaspilota (Neorellia) spp.); lateral vertical seta concolourous with medial vertical seta, more than half as long as the latter; no minute black postocular setae (except in Icterica ); posterior orbital seta inclinate (in Xyphosia and Neaspilota ); R1 uniformly setulose dorsally, without gap at the level of vein Sc apex; R4+5 setulose to the level of crossvein dm-cu dorsally and ventrally (in Xyphosia and Icterica ), to R-M (in Ictericodes ) or bare (in Neaspilota and Valera gen. n.); wing pattern reticulate, banded, or reduced or lacking; phallus glans wide, with impaired tubular acrophallus, but without sclerotized apicodorsal rod; aculeus usually wide and blunt apically; larvae not forming galls. Species occur in the Palaearctic ( Xyphosia , Ictericodes , and Valera gen. n.) and Nearctic Regions ( Icterica , Neaspilota ).
