Type locality. Purakanue , near Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand .
Variation. Not significant.
Size. Largest specimen, 18 mm.
Diagnosis. Gnathopod 2 propodus palm acute, sinuous with mid-palmar sinus. Pereopod 6 sexually dimorphic, merus and carpus expanded. Uropod 2 endopod with marginal robust setae in 2 rows.
Remarks. Until now, the authorship of Orchestia tumida has been attributed to Thomson (1885). Thomson’s work does not meet the requirements of Articles 13.1 and 13.3 of the Code for availability of this name, therefore it is considered a nomen nudum. Stebbing (1886) is the preliminary publication of the species which was read to the Zoological Society of London. It was not until Stebbing (1887) that the species was formally described and illustrated based on material sent to Stebbing by Thomson. In subsequent work, Thomson (1889) referred to Stebbing’s (1887) full description and provides some figures of the female.
Previously unrecognised type material used for the species description by Stebbing (1887) has been located in the NHM, London collection. The location on the vial matches the original location stated by Stebbing in both 1886 and 1887 with clear provenance indication from Thomson as the collector. The specimens are now labelled as syntypes. Described in 1887, the material predates the establishment of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature when type designation was commonly recognised at the turn of the century.
Tatahipeke tumida comb. nov. has a similar male gnathopod 2 propodus palm sculpturing to B. spadix and both species have sexually dimorphic pereopods in males. In T. tumida comb. nov. the male pereopod 6 which has an enlarged merus and carpus, while pereopod 7 is not enlarged. In B. spadix pereopod 7 is enlarged, while the state of pereopod 6 is not presently known. This converse state of enlargement between pereopods 6 and 7 of these species is both striking and easily confused when viewing material. See also remarks for T. cookii comb. nov.
Habitat. Sandbanks, among roots of littoral plants, many yards from high-water mark ( Thomson 1885; Thomson 1913). Stream side of dunes ( Hurley 1956). On and behind sand hills (McIntyre unpublished manuscript, according to Hurley (1956)).
Distribution. New Zealand. South Island: Dunedin; Purakanui; Otago Peninsula; Warrington; Oreti; Invercargill ( Thomson 1885; Hurley 1956; current study). Stewart Island ( Hurley 1956).
