Based on:— Pellia appalachiana R.M.Schust., J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 91: 145 ( Schuster 1991), nom. inval. (Art. 37.7; herbarium not specified).
Type:— USA. South Carolina: Whitewater River gorge, along roadside bank just above (and to the west) of the bridge situated ca 0.5 mi below the Lower Falls , ca. 1500 ft., 2–2.5 mi above Jocassee, Oconee Co., RMS 40921 ( holotype F) .
Note:—The description in Schuster (1991:145) may serve as a valid description of the species. This is supposed to be a hybrid between P. epiphylla ( Linnaeus 1753: 1135) Corda (1829: 654) and P. neesiana ( Gottsche 1867: 69) Limpricht (1877: 329) .
