Taxonomy. Original description: Gobio damascinus Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1842: 314, pl. 482 [Damascus, Syria; lectotype: MNHN 0000-4494; lectotype selected by Krupp & Schneider (1989: 365)] .
